Hey dolls, so I have been dying my hair like a mad woman since I was thirteen, but over the past three or four years I have only dyed it black every five or six months. I dyed it brown-black most recently in April 2011, and haven't touched it since. I was inspired by Weylie (ilikeweylie on youtube) because I have been dying for a rich, deep burgundy shade but haven't had the guts to go through with it until she posted a video on how she dyed her hair using L'Oreal HiColor HiLights in Magenta, specifically made for dark hair. So I took the plunge right into the deep end, bought the dye, and my roots took to the dye, however the length of my hair remained almost black with a somewhat red tinge to it. Now I'm thinking that I want to do as little damage to my hair as possible (I've been taking biotin for months, applying masks, heat protectants, not using much heat, etc) but I would like for my hair to be all one colour (either the red I desire or a medium, rich brown) without shelling out the money to go to a salon. I'm sorry for the novel but if any of you have any tips you could give me I would appreciate it greatly! I just don't want to dye my hair all black ever again :(

I also only used 20 volume creme developer, if that helps!

The deep burgundy took to your hair that hasn't been colored correct? I've been having the same problems with mine and it not taking red--as you can see in my picture I finally got the red, but I had to bleach my hair to get that red.

Easiest fix: Go back to your natural brown-black. You can use a demi-permanent that is not as damaging as a permanent and it will last because it only rinses completely out on virgin hair, which yours is not. You can get an 8 BR or 8BRV* I'll explain colors below.

option 2: it's kind of a hit or miss, but you can apply 10 volume creme developer with equal part bleach from the ends up and if it lightens it enough to take the magenta color you can recolor it. If the 10 volume doesn't lighten it enough, you can apply it again and it should take your hair 1 shade lighter then apply the all over magenta.

Hair Coloring Basics:

1=Black
2=Black Brown
3=Dark Brown
4=Brown
5=Light Brown
6=Dark Blonde
7=Medium Blonde
8=Light Blonde
9=Lighter Blonde
10=Lightest Blonde (near white)

So when you're buying colors...keep that color scale in mind. To add to it there's
G=Gold
R=Red
V=Violet
A=Ash
C=Copper

So if you got a 2 black brown with R after it, it would have the red tint...

I can get out my school notes for more thoughts, but the easiest way to go I think would be to go back to your black brown and put a color glaze over it that won't damage your hair to give it a magenta shine in the sun.

There a product called colour B4 and its like a buffer to get out the colour from your hair but its not a stripper or a bleach, my sister and a friend used it and although it wasnt a great deal difference to how it look it was a little lighter but it removed a lot of the colour that had built up on the strands so the next time they dyed there hair they got a better result, it might be worth trying :)

My hair was died black, and then I used the same product as you, the Hicolor Hilights in magenta, and I love my results.

However, I used a 40 volume developer.
