Whatever anyone says, do not use things with silicone in them. They give the illusion of smoothing your ends when in the long run they split like crazy. Also, if you haven't dyed your hair, you don't need products with added protein in them, that will make your hair prone to breakage. Honestly, there is nothing store bought that you can buy which is going to *actually* improve your hair, it's all going to make it smooth and what not, but only for the time being. In the long run, they all contribute to breakage. If your hair is dry, definitely oil it and follow jacqlyns steps. Again, simple coconut, olive, almonds oil. Not the drug store hot oil packs, those are loaded with junk.

Everything you get in the drug store is full of preservatives, think about the shelf life of those bad boys. If its not silicone, it's sulfates. Skip all that crapola.

Any kind of product that says it heals split ends is a lie: once your ends are split there is nothing you can do to fix it. Get it trimmed regularly when they start to split and to prevent them from happening between trims, rinse your hair with cold water after washing and dry it with an old cotton t shirt instead of a towel when you get out of the shower. it prevents breakage and split ends.

It could be your shampoo is too drying for your hair I hate to say it but if you use crappy products then it will crap out your hair - the elements and sun can damage your hair as well - I would suggest a moisturizing shampoo - I like Paul Mitchell personally I splurge on hair car products and my hair is so healthy n benefits so much from it - I have not cut my hair for the past 2-4 months and I barely have any split ends and before I did cut it I hadn't had it done 6 months prior and my hair dresser complimented me on how healthy my hair looked n said she couldn't see any heat damage but I straighten my hair once in a while but since I use great products my hair is still healthy even if I don't cut it - AND it's color treated ;) so that's my personal secret - be good to your hair n it will be good back :)
