I'm not sure, but I know that some of my sephora brushes were really bad and were very prickly on my skin and made my skin itch. I finally found some brushes from Style master that were cheap and nice on my face. Try to find really nice fluffy brushes. Also, it's really nice when you can feel the brushes before you buy them, so go for ones like that.

I have very sensative and acne prone skin and I've realized that certain brand face brushes irritate my skin. With the same problems you had; I tried many different brush sets before finding two or three brands that didn't irritate. I really like any kind of MAC brush, Sonia K (don't know how to spell the second name) single brushes and for some reason elf powder brushes are good for me. Also, I recommend using a flat top powder brush to apply your foundation if the other brushes cause you discomfort. I also recommend using a beauty blender or beauty blender knockoff if the irritation persists. That way you cut out the need. For face brushes!
I know I don't have any concrete answers but I'm hoping my personal experience can help you a little bit!

Yes, it's definitely possible. I also have sensitive skin, and can only really use synthetic brushes. Anything made from natural, animal hair irritates the heck out of my face. It will get red, start to itch, and sometimes be a little painful depending on what I used it for.

Sigma, bareMinerals, Coastal Scents, and Real Techniques (specifically the Expert Face brush?).

I'm really not sure. I don't know if the way they're shaped has anything to do with it or not.

Make sure you clean them weekly
