i just started thyroid meds for low thyroid about 7wks ago and my naturally curly hair is getting really knotted, tangles all the time and shedding like mad :( the texture is wacked out!
anyone else experience this, wondering how much longer b4 shedding stops. tempted to cut my long hair off, trying to resist.
any tips greatly appreciated.

Tiff, you should ask your doctor about this. It's normal to shed up to 100 hairs every day so it depends on how much hair you're really losing. You might be shedding more because of the agitation from the new knots but generally if your thyroid is normal you shouldn't be shedding so much. I suspect that your medication needs to be adjusted (maybe higher level or another type of drug) as high shedding is an indication of a low thyroid. I just read somewhere that Synthroid might be causing excessive hair loss but eventually it slows down after a few months - not sure if it's true. Another alternative is to just go off the meds and see a holistic doctor for a safer option.

Try the Pantene De-Tanglers. :D It may help to salvage your hair!

I have had a low thyroid for the last 4 years. Every time my medication gets changed I notice the exact same changes for the first month, then it goes back to normal. My eyebrows, and eyelashes also thin out. It is very annoying. If you are losing hair drastically go see your doctor, they may have given you a too high of dosage.
