Hey beauties, I just dyed my hair dark auburn. It seems to be fading now and I keep reading online that red tones of dye are hard to maintain. Any experts care to give me some advice on how to care for my new hair color??

Red is the toughest to maintain, but well worth it :) I had auburn hair a couple years ago, here are a few tips!

- You could try a color depositing shampoo once or twice a week, like L'Oreal ARTec Professionnel Color Depositing Shampoos (http://www.haircareusa.com/artec_color_depositing_shampoo.htm)

- Protect your hair from the sun -- it's one of hair color's worst enemies! Covering it with a hat or scarf does wonders.

- After you dye it again, wait like, a day or two until you wash it.

- A color glaze like Radiant Red John Frieda
Luminous Color Glaze (http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?skuId=2126040&productId=VP11231&navAction=push&navCount=1&categoryId=cat120030) keep it looking shiny and maintains the red.

As many have posted above... Red hair is definitely difficult to maintain and you lose the color very quickly. My hair is currently a very bright raspberry hair and I have been able to maintain it's color but a lot has to do with the product you use as well. What did you use to dye your hair? If this product allows you to keep the dye (like punk colors or RAW colors that you get at hot topic, etc.) this is awesome because you can keep a little left over from dying your hair and once a week - mix a little of it with your shampoo (or conditioner if you do not shampoo) to revive your color. If it does not allow to do so, then you will want to ensure that you do not wash your hair in very hot water... this will make your hair color fade very quickly. If you use any hot tools on your hair, make sure you use a Red Hair Color protector/conditioner - John Freida has an awesome Red Hair Conditioner called Radiant Red Color Magnifying Conditioner. check your local drug store to see if you have it. I always try to purchase hair color like RAW or Splat if I am going to go red or purples... I love the vibrancy and it is easy to maintain considering it does wash out - I can always add a little color to spice it up. :) As mentioned above... try to protect your hair from the sun... it will fade faster if it is exposed often. Make sure that you also keep it conditioned. :) Hope that helps.

dont wash too often. Most ladies wash their hair WAAAAY more often then they need to. My hair is red, blonde, and dark brown, so I have 3 colors I'm constantly trying to maintain and my biggest ally in that fight is not washing more than once or twice a week.

Also, when you DO wash, make sure you're using a color safe shampoo AND conditioner.

Personally if you can skip one step, that is less color run off, so I use Wen, which is a shampoo and conditioner together and it works extremely well. Also, avoid super hot water, the heat opens up the follicles in the hair, and causes it to expand, releasing more color. Try washing in cool water instead.

Thanks for the suggestions ladies, I got myself shampoo and conditioner for red hair, I usually dye my hair with drugstore hair dye like Revlon. I didnt know about not washing often, I just hope this color holds for a while cuz I really love it a lot.

When I used to do red I would intitially dye it, yknow with the semi-permanent/permanent hair dye. & Once it started fading I would use a demi-permanent red hair dye to keep it vibrant. Demi-permanent dyes are ones like Manic Panic or those crazy rocker vibrant dyes you see at Sallys/Hottopic and such. If used on blonde hair, these would be VIBRANT! And crazy. But used over brown hair you just get that nice glaze/tone. These are much much gentler on your hair as well. MUCH gentler, no damage. When I would do this I'd put it in.. leave it for 20 minutes, blow dry my hair (the heat intensifies), wait a while more and then wash it out. No damage really, at all. This will intensify your red and last for a good 3 weeks, or more! & It's much easier to keep doing this when it fades, rather than use a semi permanent box color. Hope I helped!

My red lasts long time.:) I wash every other day. I only use color safe shampoo at the roots when I wash. I use a color depositing conditioner (my favorites are from Bumble and bumble or Aveda). I also use a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week. I also rinse with tempid water.

p.s. try using color from sallys rather than the drug store if you can. Drug store brands contain metals to speed up the process. they can make you hair fade quicker/damage the follicles.

Don't use Chi color! It sucks my towels turned pink for months!!! Literally and now it's a different color. The best shampoo for color treated is redken after I used it my hair started to be better. But the chi seriously sucks that's all I have to say! Lol

I'm thinking about dying my hair an auburn color maybe a bit lighter. Do you think it would suit me?

Make sure the shampoo and conditioner you're using is for color treated hair.
