Define "business casual"

I just got a job where the dress code is business casual.

Thing is, wherever I seem to look has a different definition.

So, what's your idea of it? Most of my jobs before all had uniforms or were casual (like in small local stores) so I'm not too sure what's the protocol.

Any help is awesome. Thanks!

For me, business casual is business clothing with more flair.

You don't have to wear the full out suit, just dress pants or skirt. Pair that with a cute top. Accessorize however you want to pair well with that top. You can wear normal dress/buttonup shirts as well. Sweaters are fine too. Throw a boyfriend blazer over when it's cold and you're good to go!

black pants with cute tops. flats. you dont have to like wear a tie or whole pantsuit. google business casual and you can get all kinds of ideas!!

Thanks ladies :)

The reason why you see so many different variations of "Business Casual" is because it all depends on what industry you find yourself working in.

Say a lawyer at a lawfirm: that could be khaki's w/ a dress shirt... even so, that might even be pushing it too casual. Since they are well-paid, clients EXPECT to see someone put together and polished, and if it were me, I would want my lawyer in an expensive suit 24/7 if they were representing me.

A person in a design-oriented industry has much more creative freedom to express themselves in the office. I can wear a zebra pencil skirt w/ a black blouse and a cardigan over it w/ a red belt or heels... and it works to my favor as making me look like a more "trendy" professional that knows how to make a statement while still looking polished.

Tech companies are much more relaxed - especially if the work environment is young. You can walk in with a t-shirt and jeans if you wanted to, and they're ALWAYS handing out company t-shirts too... haha.

It also depends on your company's own mission statement or philosophy. Hope that helps you figure out how to narrow down how you will choose to fit into your own version of "Business Casual".  =)

Definitely, Soma. It's a customer service job, but over the phone, so from what I've gathered khaki type pants or comfortable dress pants and a blouse or cardi should be ok. I wonder sometimes why call centers aren't just casual, the customers can't see us!

If it's in a call center then business casual would most likely be khaki or black slacks with a white or navy button blouse or polo shirt. Depending on the call center they may provide you with the shirts, example - Amazon.com's call centers provide their employees with shirts as does State Farm and a few others. Flat shoes (no tennis shoes).

RAVER ;) lol jk...just not over the top :)

My office was business casual. It basically just meant no jeans, open toed shoes/sandals, t-shirts/tanks.
