I've been wearing a cat eye since I started high school—over 13 years ago, yikes—and I've gone through my fair share of liquid liners. I want to know your opinion about what you're more comfortable with using for the perfect winged eye.
When I first started I was a fan of felt tip liners because it was easier, but moved to thin brush tips because of their ability to make very thin lines.
What are your favorites? Do you have any unique tips on creating that perfect line?

For me, I prefer using a gel liner and a super fine tipped brush from the craft store. I know a lot of people prefer to use an angled brush with their gel liner but I have the hardest time using it! Lately I've been using Bobbi Brown's gel liner in Black Ink for about a year now, although I think I'm going to switch back to MAC's Blacktrack Fluidline because it's blacker than BB's Black Ink.
But for the summer, I've been using a dark brown liquid liner. I am completely obsessed with the Urban Decay 24/7 Liquid Eye Liner in Demolition, it's perfect for summer and stays put! I don't have any tips for getting the "perfect" cat eye, but like you, I've been doing my signature cat eye since high school, so I do say that "practice makes perfect". And even though I've been doing the cat eye liner for 5+ years, there are still days I can't get the wings completely even lol. So, don't feel discouraged if your winged liner doesn't come out perfect, it'll take a while to "perfect" it!

Do you guys feel like for beginners they should start with a product other than gel? For me I feel like the sequence for wearing liquid liner is felt, brush tip, then gel. Thoughts?

I cannont work with gel liner for some reason! I don't know if I'm not buying the right brands or using the right brushes, but as for liquid liner...
I am OBSESSED with Maybelline's Line Stiletto it is what I go to every day and if I don't use that I'll use L'Oreal's Lineur Intense which is basically the same thing.

I agree Jasmine! I know so many people who start off with felt-tip liquid liners, and most just stick with the felt-tip. People who want a more defined and precise line tend to get a brush tip liquid liner, and very few people then graduate to gel liner. I feel like more people stick with the felt-tip liquid liners over anything else because it is a lot easier to use. For me, I started with gel liner and now I've expanded to liquid liners too. It just depends!

I've been using Maybelline Line Stiletto for a few years now and I absolutely love it! I've been wanting to try out gel liner too though!

I wanted to save money and starting using Maybelline Line Stiletto and I hate it. It gets all crusty and it has been that way since day one. It also never comes out pigmented and very streaky. All week I kept saying I need to buy a new eyeliner but I still haven't. I usually use Sephoras Liquid Eyeliner because it lasts all day and is very pigmented, I think they raised the price to $10 now, but I still need to buy it because it always goes on well.

I really like Physicians Formula 2-in-1 Eye Booster Eyeliner in Ultra Black. It has a thinner tip and works very well for me. (It's also long wearing)

Yeah, I think it's easiest to apply winged liner with a thin tipped marker style eyeliner pen.

It took me a while to get the hang of it, but I love using liquid liner for my cat eye liner. I love Prestige, especially the black one. I think for beginners, gel liner would be easier to use though because it's more forgiving.

I love gel liners actually.
