I've had make-up for years but never felt like i've built up my make-up in the way that I wanted so it would be really helpful if you could tell me what are you essentials, thanks!
Easy! A good concealer, foundation, powder(loose and pressed), blush and/or bronzer, eyeliner, mascara, eyeshadow and lipstick. I would recommend going to a nice counter and just have them try out colors on you so you know what to shop for when you purchase any of these things with color.
For me it's foundation, undereye concealer, setting powder, liquid eyeliner, brown eyeshadow for my brows, mascara, and bronzer! I have a very specific routine every day when I do my makeup, and i consider all these items my easentials that I will always do when i do my makeup. :)
Concealer, a bronzer, a face powder, brow pencil/ powder and mascara are definitely my summer essentials. I would add foundation to that list for all the other seasons. Lol. Eyeshadow is definitely not an essential for me personally. I would put lipstick on my list before eyeshadow.
Definitely a good set of primers (foundation & eye), nice foundation, creamy concealer, a nice moisturizing lipstick & balm, a good translucent setting powder, a nice blush, good eye opening waterproof mascara, budge and smudge proof liner and a good old brow pencil/powdere
A great set of brushes was my first investment when I really started playing with make-up. Followed by a great concealer, foundation and powder. Everything else just kinda followed after that (blushes, lipstick, eyeshadow).
1) Skincare! This is probably the most overlooked thing, IMO. Having a good canvas to work with is going to pay dividends, not to mention (also IMO) many problems people have with makeup have nothing to do with the makeup products they use, but are down to the lack of a good skincare routine that works for them. For you, it may be very simple -- cleanser, moisturizer, SPF. Or you may need to add things here and there (e.g., exfoliator to use every so often, a serum, toner).
2) Good brushes (especially eye brushes). They're going to make all the difference to how your makeup looks. You can start inexpensively (e.l.f.'s Studio brushes, Real Techniques, No7's brushes), but I also recommend splurging on a few MAC brushes (my picks are the 239 and 217) and Louise Young (LY14 and LY38).
3) Confidence! :) In fact, this is probably the most important thing, above anything else. *nods*
foundation/bb cream, concealer, loose or pressed powder, blush/bronzer, lipstick/gloss, lipbalm (for prepping the lips if you prefer matte lipstick), lid primer, shadow, eye liner (pencil/gel/liquid), and mascara :)

Mascara, eyeshadow, and foundation are the main ones, i think. And then of course theres blush, bronzer, powder, eyeliner, lipstick, etc.

Everything Rikki said and for me I need a good creamy blush like an apricot due to being super pale & neutral eyeshadow.
