So every time I do my makeup, it always ends up looking cakey!! I think part of the issue is my skin as I do have a lot of texture and scarring issues and some active acne. What are some tips you ladies have to get maximum coverage without looking too cakey and gross? Btw I am working on clearing my skin with the help of my derm!
Here's a list of the primers and foundations I have in my rotation:
PRIMERS
• L'Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base
• Benefit Porefessional
• Rimmel Stay Matte Primer

FOUNDATIONS
• L'Oreal True Match
• Hardy Candy Glamoflague Foundation
• Cover Girl Ready Set Gorgeous Foundation
[If you ladies have a recommendation for a full coverage high end foundation for oily skin, please let me know!]

I recently bought the Laura Mercier Silk Creme Oil Free Foundation and I LOVE IT!! It is amazing and I'm super oil and you can't see my oil all day!

If it looks cakey it could be due to how you're applying it.
Just make sure you're working in thin layers. Avoid adding foundation and highlight (lighter concealer) in areas that are prone to getting cakey. Usually the inner/center part of the face.
If you're using a lighter concealer than don't apply foundation there cause you'd just be putting too many layers making it easier to get cakey.

A good more high end foundation that I find works well for oily skin is the MAC Studio Fix Fluid. I'm oily all over and that stuff holds up very well. Don't have an issue of it getting cakey looking when my oils start to come out and sorta mix with the foundation.

Thank you ladies for the suggestions! I've tried applying it with a beauty blender (doesn't provide much coverage though) and a flat top kabuki brush!

Do you moisturize prior to putting on makeup. I use to have some serious caking before and I have awful acne prone skin but moisturizing before makeup application helps so much. Even if you have oily skin it's good to moisturize right at least 30 minutes before makeup application.

Alright so with acne and scarring I know it's your first instinct to pile on the products - but that is what is causing the cakiness - you can't have so many products on bad skin and expect it to look perfect - the less products you use - the less cakey it will look - also the better your skin looks the better makeup looks on it - so you need to treat the acne and scarring first with a chemical exfoliant (BHA or AHA) then a vitamin c serum for the scars - be sure to apply SPF every day or the scarring will not diminish - once you have a good skin care routine then you can start investing in better makeup - you will want to use full coverage products that don't dry out your skin - pimples and scars can look worse when you apply anything illuminating or drying - so you need something with a matte finish that won't draw attention to the area - for raised pimples I like the Clinique acne solutions concealer - now applying concealer over acne and scars is tricky - because you need to use the smallest amount of product but achieve the fullest amount of coverage - a concealer will do that but you have to apply it in thin layers and blend out the edges so that you cover the problem but don't add unnecessary product around it which will make it look cakey - that said if you use concealer then you probably shouldn't wear foundation - and vice versa - if you do foundation you really don't need concealer - assuming you use a full coverage foundation - you can layer the foundation in your problem areas - but again they need to be thin layers that are blended properly - blending is the key to avoiding cakiness - and it takes time to blend so if you take less than 30 minutes to blend your makeup you probably aren't blending enough - I use my hands and fingers for everything because it gives me complete control over the coverage and finish I want - so I can't really make application suggestions other than apply things in thin layers and blend the edges until no additional product comes up - I hope this helps you - I've had my own struggles with acne, scarring and makeup - the products I like are all high end full coverage - because that's what works for me - for concealer I also like the MUFE full cover and the KVD tattoo concealer - for foundation I like the Estée Lauder double wear maximum cover and the KVD foundation as well as the MUFE mat velvet - for skincare I love paulas choice and Mario badescu products - those have worked great for me - so hope that helps!

Illamasqua skin base is absolutely amazing! It glides on perfectly and looks just like skin, in the uk it's £32.00 I think so I'm not user how much it is in America but you can buy it on beauty bay!

Also, I find to look the least cakey, apply it with a damp sponge, I suggest the real techniques one, and bounce and dab the product along your skin, flawless!!
