Cleansing Oil Discussion

Okay, this is a general question for all... I've been using cleansing oils for the last 4 to almost 5 years and my skin looks the best it EVER has. I use Coconut oil, Argan Oil, Sweet Almond oil, Rosehip Seed Oil, Castor oil and Jojoba Oil. I use coconut oil to cleanse and a combination of the others to moisturize. My question for everyone reading this is when you have natural options available why do you spend money on (in some cases) expensive cleansing oils that could have other unnecessary chemicals in them? I am a supporter of natural face care as I've experienced great results and I would really like to known. I'm not posting this to diss anyone's face care regime. Why spend a ton of money when you have a natural option without all the extras?

Some people cannot use straight up coconut oils / other oils on their face because of skin sensitivity. Also, some oils are more expensive / not available for others for purchase. There are a myriad of reasons I would imagine.

Here is a recent thread about oil cleansing. Have you seen it?
http://www.beautylish.com/t/iprinx/oil-cleansing-for-the-face

I love oils too.
I do my first cleanse with Jojoba oil: it melts off my makeup perfectly. I do, however, follow up with a face wash (I use warm water, not hot) and Bioderma.
I use Sweet Almond oil to moisturize my body and it's a godsend for my super dry legs.
Argan oil is what I use for my hair and to do my facial massage :)

Oils are great but they can't do *everything*. And I also agree with Winnie. If they work for you, that's fantastic but they don't work for everyone and availability is a problem sometimes.

Do you happen to know anything about wheat germ oil? I have it available but I don't know much about it so I've never bought it.

@Breeze T
Totally agree they can't do *everything* I stopped using face wash all together because it would swell my face and my skin was getting worse and for the longest time I couldn't understand why, until I stopped.

Wheat Germ Oil is meant to be very high in omegas and a good anti aging oil for your skin, as well as moisturizing, softening, and regenerative much like Rosehip seed oil, as well as squalane oil.

I haven't had the opportunity to try them but they are on my next oil order.

If you do purchase I would love to know your thoughts on it before I order.

In my case, because I never heard of such a thing until yesterday.

I would completely recommend giving it a try to see if it works for you.

Maybe! It's certainly piqued my interest. I'll have to look into it further to see which route I want to go with it. You can't blame some people for being too scared to put oil on their faces after years of being told oil is bad for you. But I don't leave the house much anyway. Just my kid will see me as a bubbly greasy mess should worst case scenario come into play hah. Time will tell :)

I totally understand :)

If you could see when I'm doing an oil hair mask and my face is oiled up - super hot lol

When I first started using oils I had it in my hand and was about to put it on my face thinking "this could go very badly..." Or it could work...

It's all about finding the combo that works for you :)

Thanks for the info! I will let you know if I like it next time! I'm going to buy it once I run out of my Jojoba, we'll see! :)

I just looked up wheat germ oil and it's a 5 on the comedogenic scale, 0 being a product that won't clog pores and 5 being the highest. So definitely not suitable for acne prone skin.

I'm interested, I used Almond oil as a moisturiser couple months ago, switching it with Jojoba, but ended in small whiteheads on my cheeks and chin... But I think I used it too much, its so easy to go overboard with oils compared to creams... My question is what was your exact procedure? Also how do you do the clensing?

AJ M.

@Teodora R

My cleansing method is as follows -
I take a quarter sized amount of a coconut and walnut oil mixture I made and I spend a few minutes massaging it into my face.

I leave the hot water tap running on full so the water gets VERY hot and then I take my face cloth, ring it out and then place it on my face, pressing it into my skin, let it cool for a moment and then wipe the oil off my face. That's where I stop unless I've had makeup on, then I repeat the process again.

I then use a witch hazel toner on my face, let that soak in and then I take a mixture of the following oils that I've mixed up and use them to moisturize my face.

Oils are the following -
Rosehip Seed Oil
Sweet Almond Oil
Jojoba Oil
Argan Oil
Castor Oil

All equal amounts in a dark glass bottle with a dropper. I give it a quick shake before I take any out.

Pat the oil onto my face and that's it.

You also only need a really small amount to moisturize your skin in order for it to soak into your skin in a decent amount of time. I go a little heavier at night if I'm just going to be a home then the oil has plenty of time to soak into my skin.

Thank you AJ,that helped a lot! Will give it a try,my skin is so dry and irritated these months, prolly due to my bf's beard and passing winter,I feel I need to ump up the moisture and exfoliation asap! Again thanks a lot for your time, very helpfull :)

Teodora R - the almond oil may have been to heavy for your skin. Jojoba is a good choice it's closer to the natural sebum your face produces.

I personally use the dior cleansing oil in addition to my "natural" oil mix mainly for the emulsifiers - they basically help to make the natural oils easier to remove after you finish cleansing... And I don't oil cleanse just for the sake of having a natural cleansing method personally - I do it to reap the benefits of using moisturizing oils but that's just me and combining them with the dior cleansing oil doesn't defeat that purpose.

Thanks for your comment :)

Never meant to give you the impression of defeating any purpose. Just my curiosity since I haven't had good luck with mainstream facial cleansers.

What's the benefits of the Dior Cleansing Oil, I've never tried it before :)

I use an olive oil based soap and makeup remover. I, too, use rosehip seed oil nightly. I think the reason folks use non-organic products is because they often work A LOT faster. If I put rosehip oil on a large pimple, for instance, it might take an entire week for it to go away, vs. an OTC product that will work in 24-48 hours.

That being said, since I use rosehip oil in general as part of my nightly routine, it's definitely kicking in help hold those wrinkles at bay!

I do it occasionally despite the fact that a hot towel on my face seems like a good way to cause more harm than good. That said I can't say I've noticed any negative effects and my skin does feel very soft afterwards. If anything, I would be sure to exfoliate regularly to prevent clogged pores.

Not all oils clog your pores like jojoba oil doesn't - and most of the oils mentioned just get absorbed into the skin as opposed to clogging - at least that's what happens with my mix and the Dior cleansing oil is basically just a high end version of an oil cleansing mix that includes emollients - so that's the main benefit I use it for AJ but it claims to remove makeup and all that but I mean any oil cleansing mix can do that too.

Totally agree with exfoliating. Very important.
