It can work
I've mostly seen heavier pieces than that but thinner ones can still look good
Having middle parts just look neater and emphasize it better

I think it looks wonky because the headpiece was place within her part rather than in the center of her head.

Their are lots of lovely headpieces that don't have a top center piece if you do not care for the center  appearance.
