My hair is very black and I'd love to go really bright red but I'm scared of hurting my hair any ideas?

The only way to get from black to red would be to bleach it. The black will take at least 2 bleach sessions depending on how many times it's been dyed that color.

To go red you need to bleach your hair to an orangey tone. as justine said you'd probably need two sessions to be able to do a really bright red. but with a darker, burgundy or purplish red you could just do it with one bleach, which would cause a lot less damage :)

Just so you know, you didn't have to make two posts on basically the same topic. Posting multiple threads of the same nature pushes other threads down, causing them to go unanswered.
To answer your question, don't bleach your own hair if you don't have any experience with bleaching. Bleach is damaging and using it without knowing exactly what you're doing can cause even more damage that may not even be fixable.
As for box dyes, I used Vidal Sassoon in Runway Red which I really liked when I had red hair
