I really really want to go no poo (no shampooing), but as I go to school I don't want to turn up with greasy icky hair. Especially not if it turns out not to w.

Oops sorry it cut me off- ork. So I'm on study leave for the next five weeks and I might go into school now and then. I'm thinking about going no poo now but I need advice! Does it work? What are the results like? How did you cope through it? How do you wash your hair? What hairstyles will hide the greasiness? Thank you! ☺️

What is it that your hoping the 'no-poo' method will do for you?

You could try dry shampoo or co-washing (washing with conditioner only)

Kitty I just want to have the healthiest hair I can and it makes sense that shampoo could be damaging it by stripping the oils. Also I have greasy hair and I'm hoping this might get that under control a bit without damaging it 😊 Shaundi, will dry shampoo be classed as shampooing or not? Co-washing is a very good idea. Any particular conditioners you recommend? Might as well get a better one if that's all I'm using.

If you're trying to go for healthy hair, you don't really need to eliminate shampoo.
I would switch to a gentle, hydrating shampoo or a cleansing conditioner, although generally a gentle shampoo should always be used for hair care. Oils can be good for your hair, but excess sebum/oil build up can actually clog your scalp and hinder hair growth.

I use Shea's moisture shampoo which contains coconut to help reduce breakage and hydrate the hair, silk protein to to soften the hair and give it a silky texture, Neem oil for shine and also includes Vitamin B5, Shea butter, Vitamin E, & Aloe Vera. It's very gentle shampoo, alternatively shea moisture has a cleansing conditioner.

If you're trying to add health to your hair, I would stay away from Dry Shampoo. That stuff is high in solvent alcohols = breakage and weakening the roots. It's as deadly as a a harsh shampoo and doesn't do much except add an extra day of dirty hair.

For healthy hair, also look into your diet (this being a long term commitment)... a diet with omegas, biotin rich foods, vitamins, etc means having healthy hair.

You can try dry shampoo or just using conditioner like Shaundi suggested. I am currently trying out a dry shampoo for the first time and I have oily hair and it's going well. I used to wash my hair every 2nd day but I now wash it every 3rd day and use dry shampoo on the 3rd day instead of fully washing it.

I started on no-poo a few weeks ago, and I'm already noticing difference! My hair isnt as oily anymore!

I wash my hair with warm water, massaging my scalp a lot and try to distribute the oils in my whole hair. :)

Though you don't need to remove it from your routine for healthy hair, I definitely recommend it! I haven't used shampoo in almost a year, and my hair has never felt this soft! I personally use about a handful, along with some hair oil (I use garnier marvelous oil) and once in a while a moisturizing treatment. My hair goes past my butt so I need a lot of conditioner lol. I leave the conditioner in for about 5 minutes and then I rinse with lukewarm/cold water. Then I put a small amount of oil in again. I shower every other to every 2 days. It may take a little bit to get used to not using shampoo, and for your hair to get used to not have that used. To help with the greasiness, try to put little to no conditioner on your actual scalp. Being that that's the newest hair, it doesn't need as much nourishment/moisture. I am so glad I did this!! If I try using shampoo now, it makes my hair feel like straw. But just using conditioner and oils, my hair is so soft and silky, so much better than anything I imagined!! I hope I helped!! If you have any questions, let me know!! :)

I have done the no poo method. It has its ups and downs. I went 18 months with out shampoo or conditioner. For shampoo alternatives I used baking soda ( 1 tbsp soda to 12 oz HOT water, let dissolve then apply to hair), borax ( 1/2 tbsp to 10 oz BOILING water, let mix sit for at least 4 hours before using) , I tried honey but that ended horribly ( nasty sticky mess), aloe ( not bad, but didn't clean as well as I hoped), and castle soap ( great at removing a massive sebum build up, but very drying). For conditioner I used apple cider vinegar ( 1 tbsp to 8 oz water) , various herbal teas ( rosemary, dandelion, nettle, and black tea) , and a citric rinse ( orange peels soaked in boiling water and let set over night). You don't want to use the soda or borax everyday, maybe once every 4 to 5 days. Combing and brushing your hair is essential during the no poo method. Before I started using the no poo method my hair was so greasy and nasty, I could wash my hair in the morning and by 5 pm it looked like I went weeks with out washing it. During the no poo phase, your hair goes through a detox period which looks like candle wax in your hair and smells like dirty socks. After the detox phase my hair has become softer, stronger ( a lot less breakage) , and much shinier. Due to hormones from getting pregnant, I had to stop doing the no poo ( thanks a lot hormones) , but I only wash my hair once every 10 days. In between washes I still use the apple cider vinegar rinse, or just good old water. Fair warning, a lot of people will try to discourage you from trying to do this method because of the ph of your hair compared to the products ph levels. My advice is to get a pool ph tester kit and check the ph of the solution before you use it ( 6.5 to 5.8 is optimal). I have never used any sort of dry shampoo ( the idea of dry shampoo to me is just disgusting, but that's my opinion, plus I'm the kind of person who can't go 48 hours with out getting my hair wet). You could also try a natural shampoo from a health food store if your iffy about going completely shampoo free. Oh and to " hide" my hair during the detox phase I relied on different updos, ( buns, braids, scarves, etc.)

I wouldn't go without shampooing hair. If you want healthy hair just watch your diet and get a shampoo without sulfates and parabens.

Also, if your inspiration behind not shampooing is that you think that back in the days when women had that gorgeous long thick hair that you see on the paintings...you don't see the real picture. They didn't shower for days, and majority of women had lice. So shampoo is a blessing.

I've been following this method for a couple of years now. I use As I Am Coconut Cowash and twice a month or depending how my hair feels and looks I go in with a non-sulfate clarifying shampoo to take care of any product buildup from stylers and just take care of my scalp. I made the mistake of using regular shampoo on an overnight trip and my hair was not happy with me at all...knot central, itchy/dry scalp.

Thank you all this really helps!! Jen, what's the idea behind a citrus rinse? What does it do? Nathalie, look it up online and you'll see what I mean ☺️ it's nothing to do with wanting long thick hair (not meaning to boast but I have that already and it's a nightmare. Getting it cut shorter soon). It just makes sense to me that shampoo is damaging to my hair 😌

The citric rinse has an acidic ph level ( less than 7) , it helps to close the hair shaft in the same way apple cider vinegar does, but without the vinegar smell.

I've had great results with eliminating shampoo from my normal hair care routine. I recommend oil cleansing or co washing you still want your scalp to be clean but I think shampooing very often has negative effects on the scalp and hair. Alternative to oil cleansing I use castile soap with I want a deep cleanse. I didn't have oiliness on my scalp it was more dry but after I stopped using shampoo personally my hair grew like a weed.

Eliminating shampoo won't help. You just need to wash it not so often maybe once or twice times a week at least.

It's better to go with no conditioner because the shampoo cleans the hair
