So I just started a new job as a hostess and soon will be taking up a second job as a server so I can take back to back shifts...so that means, I am ALWAYS on my feet. Yes ALWAYS. Right now I am working 7 hour shifts, 6 days a week. Here where I live your break lasts 20 minutes or less and are considered part of your work day, therefore I am not able to take a lunch break so I am STILL on my feet whenever I do get a chance to eat a little something or what have you. I get to sit down at least 20 minutes (and not all at once) a day when my job is dead (which is not for long) or when I go to the restroom or whatever the case may be.

ANYWHO! The shoes I have been wearing are KILLING me. I have been so sore it is not even funny! lol. The first few days I wore flats (BIG mistake as my feet are arched and it provides no support), the others I wore about 1 1/2 inch heeled boots. NOOO! Not suitable for the tiled/rocky, uneven floor I work on. I have plenty of tennis shoes but I want to refrain from looking too casual obviously as it is a fancy workplace. Any suggestion? on what I could do or good places to find decent looking work shoes?!

I have noticed the servers wearing chucks or just normal vans etc, but for me personally I would like to uphold the company as it is, fancy. And being that I am a hostess, I can get away with looking a little pretty lol (the servers can't wear their hair down, no nail polish, and no makeup; Us hostess got lucky there)

Since you still need to be presentable, look into Keds. Their teacup shoes are cute and comfy! (Pic below). If you need good sneakers, I love my saconey low jazz sneakers. I wear my orthotics and they are perfect.

I usually wear toms! They don't slip very much, which is a big thing in my restaurant, and they are the least painful, especially on football days when I'm doing ten hour shifts!

If you want to still wear flats to be fancy, I suggest you buy shoe insoles that you can put in your shoes (1 pair that you can move around)

Definitely insoles. I have to wear the UGLIEST non skid shoes and even know they're ugly they're comfy

Yup, you can buy them at a pharmacy. So much cheaper than buying shoes and you can wear anything you want.

Either buy insoles or go to Payless...they have a good selection of shoes that are comfy and work friendly that look fashionable and appropriate for your type of job.

Thank you all so much. I'll check payless too they're having a sale right now :)

I saw your post a while ago about an interview, you got the job?! That's awesome :)

Keeping up the looks I find is definitely important in the service industry as you represent the restaurant as a whole. I served for a year and my arches are really sensitive as well as my knees so standing for long periods of time or walking in the wrong shoes can be really painful. No matter what shoes you buy BREAK THEM IN FIRST. wear them around the house, walk the dog, anything because no matter how comfy a shoe is nothing sucks more than breaking it in during an 8 hour shift and dinner rush. I agree with getting insoles, but I really enjoy using toms for work. They're not overly casual when paired with the right outfit.

Payless has some good non slip shoes/sneakers, I also wear Crocs, sketchers also has nice comfy non slips sneakers. I work at IHOP by the way.

I second the Payless suggestions! I get shoes from there called DeFlex Comfort (I think) and they are seriously SO comfortable! Like more comfortable than being barefoot lol and I have fkd up feet that are always hurting. the style is "Claire" I attached a pic of them :) I got them while walking around downtown one day in heels and my feet started KILLING me so I ran into Payless and got whatever felt comfortable. I own 4 pairs of them now lol they're like little pillows! They are scrunched up normally but then when you put them on they look like normal flats

I've been a cocktail waitress for 16 years in Vegas and let me tell you I've literally had a nail or 2 fall off from walking so much over the years. I've learned that investing in a good pair of shoes and arch supports are a must. I myself like Clark's, sketchers the relaxed ones they look like a pair of Mary janes and are super comfortable, naturalizer make good ones, as well as life & stride, you can find most of these at famous footwear. Also if you have a SAS shoe store where you live, or a shoe store Called the walking company definitely check them out as well. I find the mary Jane style to suitable the best for me I have a high arch as well so for the support an insert is a must.

Also look up shoes for crews they are ugly but are ment for those of us in the service industry.

Brittany, thank you. Toms seem to be a popular choice, and if thats the case they must be comfy lol. I'll check them out.

Cristina, cool thanks!

Grace, I've seen those! lol. never tried them though.. I'll check them out and see if they feel better on the feet than all my other flats. (:
Thanks so much Nicole! Ill look into those when I stsrt serving for sure.

I don't know why, but...

Boots :- are extraordinarly confortable when it comes to walking/ going to a place were you have to constaky move.

joggers:- your foot feels tight and after continously wearing joggers for more than 7 hrs.

Flats:- like pumps and all they kepp slipping of again and again so its not a good idea.

Hope I helped. :)

I have incredibly high arches and I work in a day nursery and a gymnastics club as a coach so I understand the standing up thing! I love wearing Dr Martens (but for the love of your feet please break them in first!) and Skechers flex knit with memory foam. SO comfortable!

Sketchers relaxed fit hands down. They have a ton of styles and they have memory foam footbeds. So comfortable! I've become a hoarder of them lately bc they seem to always be on sale at Kohls:)

Walmarts nonstick shoes like that Dr schols (or however it's spelled) are super comfy I was working at McDonald's and I wore them I rarely had the issue of my feet hurting.

I would get insoles or if you're willing to spend a little money Merrell have some very comfortable shoes. If you still have problems get orthotic inserts from a dr/podiatrist... Saved my feet a few years ago!
