Okay, so one of my friends bleached her hair by herself and of course, it's now all brassy orange. It's pretty damaged, and other than going to the salon to fix it could she use toner on it? Or does she have to bleach it some more and then use toner because it's bright orange?

She would really prefer to do this by herself for some reason... so if anyone has any specific products to use and methods that would be great to know as well. Also, I don't know exactly how damaged her hair is but I can check it out tomorrow to see if it can take another bleaching.

Yeah she could do it on her own, but it will probably just melt off. It sounds like she doesn't know what she is doing. Blonde is really hard to do for professionals even. Its different than doing other box dyes because of the bleach. A toner will help but if she wants it to look right and not melt off like I've seen girls do before, then she needs to go to a salon. Sorry for being so negative but there is no way I would ever recommend doing blonde on yourself at home especially when you aren't quite sure what you are doing.

In order for a toner to do its job, hair has to be lightened to at least a level 7/8, or look like the inside of a banana. From what you described, her hair is still much too dark for a toner to do anything. If she's that adamant about doing this herself your friend needs to do a serious protein treatmemt (for non-pro use I like the apHogee 2step protein treatment available at sallys) before she can even think of touching her hair again. then, after doing the protein treatment she can bleach again using NO HIGHER than a 20vol peroxide. it'll take longer, but itll also keep her hair from melting off as badly.

And, once her hair looks like the inside of a banana peel, or close to it, then she can tone it. this process may take a few days (normally depending on a clients base color itll take a few sessions to get them blonde) but her hair shouldn't melt off. After all is said and done, she needs to go get a trim to get all of the dead and damaged ends off. the protein will not fix these. *ALSO, PROTEIN TREATMENTS LIKE THE ONE I MENTIONED ARE ONLY TO BE USED ONCE EVERY TWO TO SIX WEEKS* ANY MORE AND IT CAN MAKE HER HAIR WORSE.

I agree with baileigh mostly. I'd tell her to go to a salon though. If her hair is like mine, using a protein treatment will literally cause it to break off completely. Hair is basically made up of protein and moisture, and in most cases the protein is gone once it's bleached, but sometimes it's the moisture that's gone more than protein. For me, after bleaches I need moisturizing masks with no protein. The protein in my hair doesn't get affected so using protein at any time I'm my hair, unless the moisture level is too high, will cause it to break off. If her hair is like that, which you won't be able to tell without learning in school, than using a protein treatment could damage it more and cause it to break and fall off.

Salon, salon, salon....seriously. She could wreck her hair beyond saving. I'd seek a master colorist at a reputable salon.

Yeah alyx, although everyones hair loses protein after bleaching. How much they lose depends on the condition of the hair. I'm a licensed hairstylist and colourist btw, so I did learn this in school as well as just through working. she insisted she was going to do it herself which is why I tried to walk her through it step by step.
