Is a concealer supposed to be your shade or a couple shades lighter??

It should actually be just a bit darker. If it's too light, it will actually highlight dark circles and blemishes, which is definitely not the effect anyone is going for.

It depends on what you're using the concealer for.
For example, if you're using it to make under your eyes lighter/highlight then you'd use a shade lighter.

If you're using it for blemishes around the face then you'd want it to match as close to your skin as possible because if it's lighter in color it may make the imperfections you're trying to cover show more

Aurora is 100% correct, lighter for highlighting and skin toned color for blemishes (:

Same shade as skin tone for blemishes.
1-2 shades lighter for highlighting.
1-2 shades darker for contouring.

Or you can use shades that are opposite for color correcting, mine are yellow and green.
