You could go to a hair dresser to get them much lighter and then the growing process to you natural color should be much more gradual

Getting rid of the brown will only make it blonde. you can make it a shade of grey, but that requires a lot of up keeping since the grey is just a toner and will fade. your best bet is to start hilighting to make your transition more graceful.

I agree that a salon visit will provide some excellent ideas on how to grow the grey out beautifully. I'd hit up Yelp or Foursquare to check photos and read reviews if you don't already have a great salon. I personally would use a master colorist.

It's a very long process, I understand. It takes at least a year if upkeep to then, finally, be able to let it go. I've played with the idea for years, but am just not ready. It may not look great for a while, but the freedom will be fantastic in the end. Definitely go with a professional and keep on top of the process so it looks as nice as can be.
