I have been considering getting a perm. No tight curls or anything, just loose waves like in the picture below. But I'm afraid of how damaging it is and how often I'd need to get it done. So my questions are:
1.How damaging would a loose wave perm be?
2.How often would I need to get it done to maintain the look?
I have butt length hair that's thin and fine, pin-straight, and dyed red (I home color my hair about once a month). It is very healthy with minimal split ends and frizziness.
Thank you ladies! And here's what I want!

Curly hair is really difficult to maintain!! I have naturally curly hair and it's a constant struggle. Plus, perms are very expensive. I'd recommend just getting a high quality curler to curl your hair when you want to.

However, if you really want to get a perm I think it would look good on you!!

As for the damage factor, check out this article! http://hair.allwomenstalk.com/things-you-need-to-know-about-perms/2/

1. Depends how they're done! They can be very damaging due to the chemicals and process used

First off though, I'd recommend doing heatless curls (like bantu knots, headband curls, pin curls, small rollers) to see how it'd look, plus you may find that constant curly hair isn't manageable and would just like to stick to your hair now. My mum had a perm like the one you want and she couldn't straighten her hair when she had it. She found it really high maintenance and had to have it cut off.

I got one almost a year and a half ago and my hair is still curly. I got a "beach wave" perm and it was really wavy curly in the beginning but it looked really good. It did damage my hair but not terribly it's just suuper dry. I really recommend getting one it makes doing your hair every day sooo much easier. I just kinda scrunch it in the shower with a little water and it's done

Thank you ladies for your input!
Abby, I completely understand that it can be difficult to maintain, but so is straight hair. Normally for the school year I curl my hair and it stays until the next time I wash it (every 2-3 days) When I have the waves in ny hair it's a lot easier to maintain for me. Thank you :)
Hannah, I do heatless curls and regular curls often. I know how it'd look and I think wavy hair is more manageable than straight lol thank you for telling me about your mom's experience! I'll definitely keep that in mind!
Alex, that's awesome. Thank you for telling me! :)

I've gotten perms before and they do damage your hair if you don't take care of it afterwards.
I would invest in a good hair serum to apply.
If you hair is really straight, you might want to go for tighter curls than beach curls because it'll start to loosen.
I don't regret getting a perm (I have thick slight wavy hair and have gotten both a straight and curly perm)
I think it's worth it if your spending that much time curling your hair.
