Backpacking for the First Time

I, like many other people, read Wild by Cheryl Strayed and thought it would be a good idea to go backpacking. At just one year older than me and with about as much hiking experience, Cheryl hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, so surely I should be able to do a 1-day overnight hike, right? Right! Needless to say, I didn't know exactly what I was getting myself into. Luckily, I had Xavier, an experienced 14er hiker, to help me out with hiking gear, but the backpacking part was new for both of us.
