This is my first ever attempt at a smokey eye, actually I don't even wear eye shadow so it's almost a first for that too. Plus, I suck at makeup. I did it super quickly just playing around to see if I could do it.

So I know it's crap haha. But do I have the right idea? I followed the directions on the back of the eyeshadow I got. The hardest part was the color on the crease for me.

Are you supposed to blend that color out?

Excuse the rest of my makeup, it's like the end of the day and I've been out walking in the wind and rain lol.

I think the most important part of smokey eyes is blending. Blending enough but not too much. it's a struggle ik lol but practicing makes it seem like nothing after a while :)

Okay, what's important to remember about smokey eyes is that the color is darkest all around your eye, and then gets lighter as it goes up. This is a stereotypical example of a smokey eye. Cheyenne is right about the blending, though, it's extremely important that your smokey eye has no harsh lines to be considered correct :)

Don't be afraid to go darker ;)

I'm not sure how to blend. I don't have a blending brush or anything, I just used the little foam brush that came with the eyeshadow. I'll try though :) Hannah, oh okay, I thought it was smokey because that's what it said on the package and it had directions. What is that style called then? And Janelle, okay ;) the eyeshadow I bought doesn't seem to wanna go in very dark though lol. Thank you all :)

My assumption would be a gradient, which is a graduation of colors horizontally. I.e. lightest on the inner corner, blending to a midtone, blending to the darkest shade on the outer corner. A lot of packaging is incorrect, but it's important to know that when you say "smokey eye" technically (actually according to technique) it means the smudging of dark colors all around the eye.

The best advise I can give and hopefully you can make out what I'm saying... start just below the brow with a shade slightly darker then your completion, blend a darker color into that slightly closer to the crease.. the another dark color into the crease.. apply your darkest color on lid and blend that into your crease color... its the easiest way ik to make a smokey eye.. hope I was helpful.
