Bite beauty all the way! their lipsticks are literally made from food grade items so you can eat them if you want (though I don't recommend it) also they have a cult following on YT already for being amazing products.

I believe they have a small portion of lead. As a child my dad used to play with lead and he's fine now so you should be alright.

A lot of it is hearsay...Especially from that ews skin deep site. Jacqueline and I are constantly busting these myths on Beautylish. But I can see our efforts are overlooked on the matter. Don't even get me started on the whole XYZ Ingredient 'Free' label. It very rarely is.

I remember the fda tested a ton of lippies a couple years ago and found they contained high levels of lead.

Ill find the list. I think the one that contained the highest amount was a maybelline lipstick.

Well, this isn't a brand but you can make your own out of crayons! Just youtube it and it should come up:)

Although the fda found they contained high levels they felt it wasnt a safety concern http://healthland.time.com/2012/02/15/what's-in-your-lipstick-fda-finds-lead-in-400-shades/

It's hard to say because there are so many rules & regulations with loop holes that will allow you to not even list what other ingredients your product may contain. ( Lucas pawpaw ointment doesn't even list what it has other than active ingredients ). If it's up to a certain amount they allow you to not list it. Like how often times we find 'Alcohol free' products contain a harsh alcohol listed in the ingredients. So it's generally up to learning how to read and identify ingredients. Just because it's a chemical doesn't mean it's bad! Water is a chemical, and we are made up of chemicals... heck half of what makes up a banana makes us up.
For example..
Avoiding Sulfate for hair care
Sulfate is not a black/white thing. There are gentle sulfates - which you will find in 'sulfate free' hair products and hair products who do not have 'sulfate free' claims.
Parabens are bad
No, parabens are actually a natural form of preservatives and is commonly used amongst all beauty products, and you eat parabens too ☺
All alcohol's are bad
Solvent based alcohols are usually very bad for your hair/skin. However, emollient based alcohols are great for dry skin even.

There's so many loopholes and hype... Every brand has it's good product and it's bad product. And if hearsay is really spread ( like parabens hype ) companies jump on the bandwagon.. to make the consumers happy and make $$$. And us being a bit clueless on the matter, spread our own hype on blogs and other websites in which some people forget that not all information on the internet is true.
If you want to stick to as natural as possible, making your own cosmetics is probably the best option. But I'm not a cosmetic chemist nor do I own a laboratory. Vegan, cruelty free is maybe as good as the label gets. But having your own knowledge will get you further.

Kitty summed it up best. Quite frankly I'm not overly worried about it because I can find far worse things in our food supply so I'm stickler for that. Over the past three years I've had every test done on me under the sun...lead tests included. I have a few lippies that were posted on that FDA list for high lead content. And you know what...my blood tests did not show lead poisoning or even a number to show concern with my doctors. Even vegan/cruelty free isnt the greatest. I can name several brands in that category that caused me extreme grief (Tarte, Bite Lip Mask and Burt's Bees). A lot of the articles that you see online are written by individuals without a medical background. Just some folks that grab information and misuse it for their own platform. So I'm always mindful of who wrote it and their sources listed. Then I just cross reference and research terms that I don't understand. Education is vital but it requires one to put in serious work. Also you might want to think about pin-pointing what your allergies/irritants are by getting tested by a dermo. Standard prick test method but I had it done and learned a lot. How some preservatives are not my skins friend and lanolin (medical grade at that) is an absolute NO-NO for me. Knowledge is power.

I mean...we're all still alive and as far as I know no one has died from using makeup. Lol! Shelley is so right about the food thing though...we are so worried about all the products we put on our faces but think about all the food we eat...

I just have to clarify something as a chemist I just can't let this slip... Water is a molecule - not a chemical... Pure water molecules do not contain anything other than dehydrogen monooxide... But tap water is flooded with chemicals which I believe is what kitty is referring to... But tap water is not be confused with water molecules... Just had to clear that up.. And the note about the banana every single thing on this planet is made up from the elements on the periodic table - and most organic organisms (alive or dead ) are carbon based and are made up of the elements carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen and these are the elements that make up organic materials (drugs, humans, animals, dirt... Everything)

*dihydrogen monooxide = water
