I had gotten a few milia spots a couple months back and bought a chemical exfoliant which helped and it all went away but now its coming back. my questions are what can I do to just prevent it? and what exactly causes it?

I have to disagree with Tyler..
While a Physical exfoliant can irritate the skin and do next to nothing.. a chemical exfoliant is exactly what helps get rid of Milia. Beta Hydroxy Acids especially can help penetrate deep into the pore and help with other skin concerns as well. Chemical exfoliants are in fact very gentle.
Oils also do not always contribute to milia, a comedogenic oil can help but no oil is the same.. there are a good amount of non comedogenic oils available. I recommend evalulating the ingredients in your products as most often times its comedogenic ingredients that commonly cause milia. I have found that products which contain Ethylhexyl Palmitate generally contribute to milia. Alot of face products tend to contain this ingredient so I recommend looking over each and every product. Silicone based products can contribute to clogged pores as well.

I agree with kitty. I'm currently in esthetician school & we just learned about all the conditions and milia. Just keep an eye out on products you are using because it's not the exfoliant.

I sent that too soon, Tyler is correct that milia is caused from damage to the skin & it is more common in newborns but it does also occur in adults, in that case there is no need for an actual treatment it will go away in a few months but you can go to a physician for a chemical peel or use of a topical retonoid. have you used any steroid creams?
