I have never tried it before and I realize it does make a lot of difference

You don HAVE to use these bit they are good to use: POWDER:bronzer or dark pressed powder and an illuminating powder. CREAM: you can get some really good highlighting and contouring pallets from RCMA but if you want something cheaper try the Maybelline Fit Me foundation stick in a shade 2-3 shades lighter than your skin tone and a shade however dark you want for the contour. Also putting blush in certain areas can help too. I'll insert a pic:

An that is pretty extreme contouring too. I usually go for something lighter though.

A good bronzer is the Hoola bronzer and a good highliting powder is the Physicians Formula powder

I thought bronzer was a no go? Am I wrong?

Jul 30, 2014

Anna D.

@LeonaS it depends on brush type, the bronzer itself, your face shape, and your skin type. Sometimes you just need to experiment

Does the bronzer have to be orange?

Jul 30, 2014

@LeonaS no it shouldn't be this is the Hoola bronzer and another good one is the Too Faced Chocolate Bronzer.

Bronzer is the wrong product for contouring for several reasons:

It is often shimmery, which is not what you want when trying to create a shadow.

It is also often orange in tone, and though not all bronzers are, bronzers are warm toned and therefore unsuited to the task of contouring, which entails making a darker, almost grey toned shadow. Shadows are not orange.

If, somehow, you found a bronzer that was a matte, cool, grey toned brown, bronzers are also often sheer and therefore require a more heavy handed application. That's why, when people contour with bronzer, it can often end up looking dirty or muddy, because they have to apply and blend a thick layer of product.

In short, what you're trying to do with contouring is create the illusion of shadows, which are cool and grey toned in nature. Bronzers are specifically designed to give a bronzed glow to your face, so you should apply it on the high points of your face, where the sun would hit. Bronzers are simply not the correct product for contouring. They will never give the desired effect, though of course if you have nothing else they can be used.

I'd ask Jacqueline H what she recommends, as I myself don't contour or have experience with contour products. I do know that she highly recommends the Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder. If nothing else, a concealer or foundation two shades darker will work in a pinch. Hope this clarified it for you! :)

@HannahW I completely forgot to mention that they should be matte

But bronzer works for me when I do a light contour

Not a problem. I just think of Jaclyn Hill (someone recently told me to watch a video of hers) and she contours with bronzer and it looks horrible. I have no idea how she's a certified makeup artist, or why people like her. When I think of contouring with bronzer, I think of her and I shudder to myself.

@HannahW ya I watch her videos and I'm not a fan of her contouring either it just works for my use.

Anna's picture is a little over exaggerated but it's correct (usually you have to tweak these pics a bit to suit your face shape). As far as products go you need a highlighter/light concealer a couple shades lighter than your skin and you also need a cool toned taupeish brown for contouring. NYX blush in taupe is a great powder for contouring. You can get either cream or powder and it is totally preference...you'll have to try different products to know what you like best. Make sure to blend blend and blend some more! Practice makes perfect!

If you use products for contouring that are orangey/warm toned you will look like you have orange stripes on your face. Not attractive.

Would bronzer make me look dirty I can't just go and buy things I don't want to waste money.

For contouring:
•NYX blush in taupe ($4) •Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting powder ($44 😁)
•Benefit Hoola ($28)
•pick one ^^

Highlighting
•I don think it matters a lot...just a shade a couple shades lighter than your skin. I use the NYX hi definition concealer wand ($5)

Make sure to blend...a lot!

I also use benefit's hoola to contour because it's completely matte and doesn't look unnatural on my pale skin but depending on your skin tone it might not work for you. I use Too Faced's Candlelight Glow for highlighting, it gives a very nice subtle glow to the skin.

A good thing to use is hoola Box powder. But the most best and safe thing to use for contouring is a pressed power slightly darker then your natural skin tone. I would go 2-3 shades darker.

The picture Anna has provided is a picture that has been changed with more added products onto it by people who manipulated it falsely. The picture has changed through the years Please disregard that version of it and keep in mind the original is not to be taken literally it was an a exaggeration for placement purposes to display areas you would place product with a light hand.Leona once you get your hands on an actual sculpting kit and compare it to a bronzer you'll see the difference, it's a Mimic of shadowing and shadows are not brown and application should be seamless and subtle Now as for bronze that could be applied on top to give a added kick of color of glow that's suitable for your skin.Go outside and take a picture or grab a lamp close by and take a pic then you'll see where your natural shadow pops out and where your skin reflects a highlight. :) At this point if people want to use a bronze to contour go for it. I'm not surprised since the masses of bronze product has risen these last couple of years and the demand of contouring is at a high why wouldn't a company want to sell you what is available at this time UNTIL they come out with their own Sculpting kit for the line then the tune changes.
