I know this is a silly question, but I feel like the way I am applying it is wrong and looks bad.

I don't know if the shape of your face has that much input, but I think the general guideline for applying blush is to start at the base of your cheekbone and bring it upwards, kind of toward the top of your ear. Some people prefer to include the beginnings of the apple of your cheeks, others don't. It's all about finding what you like. Good luck! Just keep practicing :)

I also have a heart shaped face, I apply it high up on the back of my cheek bones, I find that if I apply it to the apples of my cheeks my face looks more round :)
