My favorite chemical exfoliators are BHAs and AHAs - I'm currently using paulas choice 2% BHA exfoliant in the mornings and then one night a week I use an AHA exfoliant cleanser by Mario badescu called the glycolic foaming cleanser

I do recommend using both Alpha hydroxy acid and beta hydroxy acid , they both work in different ways AHA works to resurface the skin by removing dead skin cells it also helps to brighten the skin and promote cell turnover BHA is the only thing capable of cleaning the pore walls out, and a chemical peel on it's own with not get rid of acne it can help reduce hyperpigmentation and textured skin , but you have to remember the root of acne is bacteria, weather it's hormonal or inflammatory there is still the presence of bacteria and inflammation so you don't want to cause to much trauma to your skin, by using acids that are to strong like trying to do a at home chemical peel it can definitely backfire

The common names for BHA is salicylic acid and AHA glycolic acid - if you want more info you can always Google or even the paulas choice website has great info on what each is better suited for in terms of skin type.

Also for that neutrogena lotion - it may have salicylic acid in it which may do some light exfoliation but unless it says it is specifically an exfoliant I wouldn't take it for one like my BHA exfoliant specifically says that's what it is for - exfoliation
