Everything Alexis said plus:

Sponge eye shadow brush: throw in drawer and save for doing kid's halloween makeup or some other time you don't want to use your good brushes.

Fan Brushes, you need one and they last forever since they don't get huge amounts of use. Maybe you could use the small one to clean your coffee grinder or something.

Smudge: can use to apply color to small areas of eye (inner and outer corner, anywhere you need a small amount of product). Can actually apply eyeliner with smudger as well depending on shape. (sligthly rounded at corner, flat smudger will work this way). Small smudgers can be used as a lip brush as well. The sponge kind of smudger that looks like the kind that comes on the back of eye liner pencils is fairly useless as well and I'd add that to the kid's makeup drawer.

Eye contour: depends on the shape but you can use it to apply shadow to the V as well as the crease.

Fluff brush, blending or anywhere you've put on too much product and need to remove some.

Medium angle shading brush, if it's a flat brush you can use it to line if it's round cut it's perfect for blending crease or for applying shadow to the outer corner of eye since it's already the shape of blended out smoked out eye.

Contour brush, depends on the bristles and the shape, but if it's a fluffy, synthetic angled brush, you can use it for foundation as well contouring. Those are handy for getting foundation along the sides of your nose, etc.

I find what works for me is to use any of the brushes for whatever works for me. I don't always use a brush for what its meant for. I 'll use a small fan brush for contouring & a big fluffy fan brush for blending blush after I applied it with a regular blush brush. I use an artist brush for eyeliner and a eyeshadow blending brush for contouring my nose. Just experiment. You may feel you do not need all those brushes right now, but later down the line when you're trying to achieve a particular look, you may reach for a brush you never thought you'd use.
