Start simple. First try a thin line along the lash line and waterline, and when you grow more confident with that you can move on to stuff like cat eyes. I like the Rimmel Scandaleyes kohl pencil and elf liquid ljner.

My best advice is to check it in different mirrors. I almost never have an issue with my liner not matching or being even. I look at in my bathroom mirror, in my mirror on a stand and sometimes a compact mirror. I turn my head on each side at different angles to check for symmetry.
And for beginners I think pencil is best. I second the Rimmel kohl pencil. It's more forgiving and you can always smudge it out with black shadow

I agree with Olivia. When it comes to eyeliner practice makes perfect!! I suggest maybeline stiletto eyeliner. Its the best drug store eyeliner in my opinion.

Master traditional liquid liner, everything else is easy... its a lost art I tell ya.
But, to make it easy on ya, start with a push liner brush or a chisel brush, and shadow. Just wet it a bit. And push into lash line, and practice your flicks. Its all about trial and error. And there's so many ways to line... go on youtube, or check out some make up texts...

I think gel eyeliner works best for those with shaky hands..what I do is apply gel liner (essence midnight in paris) and then use a glossy liquid eyeliner on top of it easily (maybelline master drama precise)..this way the gel liner brush helps me keep my hand steady and the top liquid liner coat makes it look good n glossy.

I think the best way to start is to practice with an angled brush and eyeshadow. Discover what style of eyeliner suits you best - are you a Cat eyeliner chick? Amy Winehouse infamous wings? Thin and a small flick kind of gal?
Once you found a good style you can copy and perfect, move onto either a gel pot or a liquid pen (just brush the product onto a brush), start with a shadow line as a draft and then use an eyeliner brush with gel or liquid eyeliner on it, trace over the line you just made. Practice and practice till you no longer need to draw a shadow draft.
I believe in you!

Invest in the Mac 210 liner brush and I also only use gels, creams or liquid, the tape method is a great idea I used to use it to get the precise straight lines.I love mufe aqua black cream shadow as my hg liner it applies very smoothly, I use it for the tight line and the lower outer lash line, I use various shades of mac fluidline for the inner bottom lash line and I use kat von d liquid liner for the top lash line.. it really is all about practice until you find a look that is easy for you (;
