Bleaching hair down to blonde or dying it darker.

Hey girls so a friend of mine has had blonde highlights for as long as I've known her. She is a natural brunette, her hair was a medium brown color and she asked me if I thought she should bleach her hair down to be entirely blonde or if she should just dye it darker like a chocolate brown or a soft black. Her concern is the harshness of the bleach vs the chemicals in hair dye. So what do you ladies think? Would bleaching her entire head of hair be too much and too damaging vs just dying it a different color?
