Hey guys! I was just wondering if anyone has advice on getting into doing published work for magazines and what not. I want to start doing makeup for magazines, thank you!
Get in with the right photographers. Try testing with new photographers to build your book - look for networking events in your area or search online for photographers in your area that interest you. Just keep working "up," test with better photographers as your work progresses and your portfolio beefs up.
Also...don't look to do magazine makeup as a job. Most fashion spreads are unpaid.
90% of your money will come from commercial and ad work and bridal/event makeup. People get this idea that they will be a famous makeup artist that works for high fashion magazines, and unfortunately unless you're Pat McGrath, that isn't a reality. Most of my income comes from private clients and commercial/TV work, and to a lesser extent runway work. Magazines are fun for me...I get to be more creative...but I don't always expect a huge paycheck, although, I do love getting editorial gratis from brands after the story gets published. That's a perk I could never live without!
