I have a dry patch on my face that I think is excema. I have tried keeping it moisturized but it has persisted for weeks now and it's very obvious on my face. My boyfriend keeps pointing it out to me and I'm really self conscious about it. I can't afford the specialist visit co-pay or I'd go see a dermatologist. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. I've gotten the dry patches before, but usually on my eyelid and this time there are what looks like small red bumps.

Hi Jessica,
I'm an MA at a derm office so here are some suggestions I talk to patients about.
--Since you cannot afford to go to the derm to get it looked at and checked out, the only options would be self treatment. In this case, if it is a persisting patch, try aquaphor three times a day. I know it is thick but worth a shot. Be persistent. You can also use cerave or cetaphil face cream. Also, eczema is agitated by fragrance and heavy makeup.
There's this great OTC cream called vanicream that works well. The only thing you can do is stay away from heavy makeup and moisturize the heck out of that patch.

I've heard that Dream Cream from Lush is a miracle for eczema. If nothing works, see your doctor.

Try Cetaphil, CeraVe or Curel's Itch Defense Lotion. The Curel lotion has the National Eczema Association's seal, and there is a new one by Cetaphil that does, too. And try to avoid stressful situations if possible as stress can make eczema even worse; your boyfriend pointing the patch out could very well be making it even worse. If you have been using any new prodicts on your face, try eliminating them to see what if that is the problem. Also, it could be the result of an allergy of some sort. I have taken Benadryl and it has helped my eczema on bad occasions. Like April said, moisturize the heck out of it. Besides going to the dermatologist, that is really all you can do for it. I hope it gets better; I can get eczema patches around my lips, eyes and on my jawline so I know how awful it is.

Aveeno has this Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream that you can buy at the drugstore and it works wonders. I get eczema around my neck and sometimes on my face, and I apply this about 2-3 times a day and the dry patches are usually gone after a couple of days.

My kids have Eczema and I was told to use CeraVe for a moisturizer (miracle cream!) and to wash with Cetaphil. There eczema is all gone after 2 days of using the CeraVe. I bought the CeraVe in the tub. :)

Thanks for all the help. I'm looking into some of these remedies, hopefully they won't be too far out of my price range.

Here's what I do, try not to expose my face to hot water for long periods of time, use a very gentle goat's milk soap, moisturize with extra virgin organic coconut oil, do raw honey masks at night about twice a week, and sleep with a humidifier near my bedside.

in all honesty, if none of the products work for you - i would just go to your doctor (not a dermatologist) and just tell them the problem you've been having and they most likely will be able to prescribe you to something. i have eczema on my face around my nose and on my eyebrows (odd places,i know) and i know how you feel with being self conscious about it. i didn't know what it was for months at a time and i was continue to buy new products to try and moisturize and remove the dry skin and nothing worked. in the end, you're spending alot of money on products that dont work rather than a doctors visit and a prescription that will work. Trust me, the cream they gave me works miracles and i'm so happy i mentioned it to my doctor. like i said, if those suggestions they gave you don't work please take going to a doctor in consideration.

I have a few different patches of eczema along with super sensitive skin. Definitely stay away from products with a lot of chemicals and fragrances. Cetaphile (like someone mentioned above) is great for anyone with finicky skin. I use their sensitive cleanser and never have issues with it. Often people with eczema have underlying allergies so if you know of any allergens that bother you I'd try to stay away from those. You can get OTC cortisone cream and gently pat it on to the affected area and that should help to a degree. You definitely don't want to dry out the already irritated, dry patches. I hope this helps a little, it can be horrible :( I'd definitely recommend seeing your regularly doctor soon if it persists, there are so many skin things it could be.

I went to my regular doctor about mine, basically he told me easy ways to maintain it were to use unscented things, baby your skin, keep it moisturized, stay out of the sun, stuff like that. Cetaphil is really good, they even have lotions that have an eczema stamp on them. I've also read that jojoba oil is a great skin remedy.
