I was a nail chomper for years. Now I have finally been able to break myself of the habit. Unfortunately, my nails are still paying the price. They're weak and they constantly peel and break. What to do?

I have the same problem. I used to bite my nails and they're usually pretty weak. Though recently I've gotten into painting them more so I've quit biting them. Some nails are still getting split (still not sure how) on the sides and some peel. I would suggest taking vitamin supplements if you don't already, this has really helped strengthen my nails. I also wear nail polish because this tends to make my nails less vulnerable. For the days you don't wear polish, I suggest a strengthening base coat. Hope this helped. (:

Essie makes a GREAT all in one base coat and the good thing about the polish is it has vitamins in it that also strengthens your nails & grows them and results are in as little as 5 days! It's goes on clear but has a blueish tint to it. I get mine from Target, but u get a better deal from Ulta cause there always having a 3.50 off of 10.00 purchase.

i used to be a bit of a biter, but what helped me was biotin/multivitamin tablets, they made my nails grow superfast. im not advising you to try them unless your sure but they are an option. if thats not an option then there are other ways to get them back in shape, heres a few tips....
1. try to keep them painted at all times, this helps strengthen them allowing them to grow back
2. a good basecoat to help growth.
3. cuticle oil
4. be careful with them ( e.g. dont go doing things that could snap them such as using them to open things ect.)
5. try to keep them away from water as much as you possibly can , the reason being is because water makes them expand and weakens them ( take a look at your nails after having a shower/doing the washing up you will notice that they will be considerably bigger and weaker) and when you do have to keep them in water for long periods of time make sure your careful with them until they return back to normal as they will be of a much higher risk of snapping.
if you follow theese simple tips your nails will be back to normal in no time :)
(ps. i only follow by 5, 4, and 1 and my nails grow very long)
hope this helped :) xx
