I am soon moving out of state and was thinking of applying at mac. I am currently a makeup artist in a salon and I really love the set schedule that always remains the same. I'd really like to try to get hired at MAC but Is here any way they hire people for set hours? I'd appreciate any info=]

I don't know how about every MAC counter, but usually how it works is they take you to a huge group interview (though I'm in the Bay Area, so it's much more popular), and if they hire you you can only start off as freelance. If a counter wants to hire you with a set schedule, you will go back to another group interview to compete for that spot. As a freelance you will be expected to be available all weekends (like a Thursday-Sun type schedule)

Thanks so much! Any advice on standing out? And should I bring a portfolio?

I've never worked for MAC, but my boss was their regional trainer, and a best friend works there. My friend who applied got her interview by dressing really nice in all black, no accessories. And very clean makeup. And she did give her a copy of her portfolio, which they actually did fax to their main office. I went with her interview (she had to bring a model). You'll have to apply make up to a model (they will switch them so that you will not be applying makeup to someone you know). They're not looking for skills, but they are looking for a couple things. One, they want to see how well you work with limited supplies. They'll only give you a couple of brushes to simulate how it might work at the counter. They also want to see how well you interact; do you talk to the client? Are you letting them hold the mirror? Are you being sanitary. And lastly, they'll ask the models a few questions like what they think of their look. Out of all the people that interviewed, only a few got the job (including my friend). And I would say a lot of it had to do with the fact that these girls were so quiet and focusing too much on their artistry. A lot of them came overly dressed in high heels, too much jewelry, and make up like they're going to a club. Just remember that while MAC has a reputation for being colorful and bold, it's still a job interview. In another portion of the interview they discuss the background of MAC (their history, their mission statement, Viva La Glam) make sure you know all about it and raise your hand if you know an answer. My friend said that she felt that helped her a great deal.
Sorrrry this was so lengthy, haha

I worked in Mac when I was a student and I had a 5 hours working day 4 times a week :) I don't know about world standards but in Russia everything always goes bad))) haha. But it's a good experience! I was self educated without diploma and I didn't have any problems with client ;)
