I have hip-length hair, and when I try to do sock buns, they become really messy and often get very loose around the sock over the process of rolling all of my hair up. Any one know how I can avoid this?

So, you're just wrapping your hair around the sock like a regular bun? (Sorry, I really can't tell from the picture.)
Do you know how to get the kind of sock bun that involves rolling the sock "donut" from the ends up to the base of the ponytail? I really like the look of that bun, but I have a hard time getting it right because my hair is just so long.

My hair is hip length too but i dont use a sock.. I found out that dance stores have this clamp that helps create the "sock bun look" but alot easier. Just look up the closest dance stores and ask about it(: and make sure you get a large. They are alot more secure too.

Hmm. That sounds like it could work. Unfortunately, I live in a pretty remote town. I'll probably look online. Do you know what this clamp might be called?

Thats is true you could buy a bun from a beauty supply thats already done and just clamp it on! Get one that matches your hair so it looks natural! Sorry about the pic and yes I basically wrapped and pinned. Until no long hairs were present

Not to sound ungrateful, but that bunqueen video didn't help. That woman doesn't actually have long hair, her hair is pretty short when you are talking to people who have hip-length or longer hair. Serious Long Hair. I'm still working on finding the right sock bun technique, my hair is long enough to sit on. When I figure it out I'll post it for all the Long Hairs out there.

What I've done to make a sock bun is start from the end of the pony/your hair and roll it down keeping it as tight and non messy as you can. Then once you have it done (if it's messy and poofy) take another hair tie or two and side it down around the bun, kinda like the way you would if you start the bun from the base of your head. Then just bobby pin any little pieces.
My hair is to my hips so I don't know how helpful this will be for ladies with longer hair.

These are the instructions that I follow for my long hair. My hair hits the top of my thigh, and I use a men's athletic sock with the toe cut off. Works like a BOSS! I braid the tail part and wrap the braid around the bun.
