I am a part time makeup artist and have my own business I wish I could do it full time but I cant right now. I would deff. consider watching videos on youtube there are alot of great gurus on there also get started working at a makeup counter they offer you training which is great and after that you can start building your portfolio if its something you really love.
Vanessa, I think the best way to start is to start at a makeup counter (ie MAC, Estee, Lancome, Clinique, etc.) at a department store. You usually have to apply within the department store. If you land a job with one of these makeup companies, they will usually have you attend some education training for about 2-3 days. You even get gratis (ie work for about 6 mos, and then you get $200-$300 worth of free makeup!). Granted, you learn all about their product and you are expected to sell their product. Speaking from experience, I worked with Clinique for a year, and even though I was expected to sell that product, I learned so many tips, tricks and fell in love with Lancome eye shadows, Benefit's lip stains and MAC's lipsticks. I started out at one counter at one store, and then was offered a position to be somewhat freelance within the different department stores. I met so many people in different brands, and even several of my friends started their makeup career this way. I had a friend in MAC start his own professional portfolio. He worked there shortly before going to Hollywood and working on sets! It's all about networking and chasing your dreams. Mine wasn't makeup as I thought-it was law! Anyway, good luck and hopefully it helps!
You can be a part time Freelance Makeup Artist. I am currently doing that. The good thing about being a MUA is flexibility so you can fit in gigs around your regular job. Commit to developing your skills, building a kit & portfolio and marketing your services to your target group. Its a great way to get into the industry and who knows, maybe later on you may be driven to take it up as a full time job. If its your passion, I think its worth a try.
I guess it depends what you want to do. If you want to work at MAC or Sephora or any place like that, just go in and talk to someone and get your resume in. I know for MAC it helps to have a backgroun in makeup or art, but it doesn't hurt to try.
If you want to freelance, all you need is a good portfolio. Just be creative and have fun!
I dont think it is unrealistic because being a makeup artist is a great job especially if you know what you are doing and if you enjoy it as much as i do. But it can be a little hard to start because ..I'm just talking about myself here ..can be different for everyone but personally even though i have a diploma in makeup artistry it is a little bit hard to get a job at Sephora and such.. and also if you want to work at home it is a little hard and time consuming to get your name out there you know. So I think making a portfolio of your work is a good idea.
hey ladies, ok so i just wanted to ask afew question about becoming a makeup artist.
so originally i really want to be a highschool teacher, but i also love makeup and doing other peoples makeup.. is it unrealistic to be a makeup artist like part time ? :S
