Never been to Miami but I Love in LA. There's a lot of stores out here that sells trendy street clothing that are super cheap. Like stuff you see from Forever 21 they have them here at local boutiques and family owned stores especially in Downtown LA. Also there's this store called 'Q' fashion in Pasadena (near LA) that sells the prettiest clothes ever and a lot of their clothes are under $30.

I'll take a picture of the clothes I got from there when I get home.

If you're shopping for clothes I would go to LA, with all the fashion shows and such I believe you can find more discounted designer clothes there before they're shipped out to other places/if they even make it to other places if that made sense? I think and they have tons of shops that sell stylish clothes for cheap.
As far as beaches, I think Miami has better ones.
I've been to one or two in California but they were either cold or kinda dirty.
Nightlife, I think they're pretty similar. Both big cities so there are things to do regardless

I agree with the ladies never been to Miami but LA specially downtown LA lots clothing stores. also if you get the chance my favorite mall in LA is the one in Culver City 3 floors of stores!! Glendale mall is also nice. you might need a car or you uber or lyft. but the busses come by very often in LA you can also get a day pass. downtownis the craziest on weekends its so jam packed its better going during weekdays.

Never been to Miami, but I live in L.A. And Melrose Ave is the place where they have lot of shops clustered together that sell vintage & eclectic clothing, shoes, jewelry & accessories.

There are two Nasty Gal stores in L.A. One on Melrose which I guess is considered either Hollywood or West Hollywood & one in Santa Monica.

I've been to both cities and I live near LA so I am much more familiar with that, however Miami is extremely well known for tourism so many shops you find will be for souvenirs and whatnot, but it is a fairly affluent area much like LA and they have some very high end shops. LA sounds like it fits your style for clothing and the nightlife is good in LA as well but I would choose Miami over LA in regard to nightlife and atmosphere just because Miami is known to be a "party city". Miami definitely wins for beaches, the water in the Atlantic is a little warmer than here on the West Coast and their scenery is unreal if you go to the right places. The key is to ask the locals and see where the hidden gems are! There is traffic in both places and transportation will be expensive due to the fact that if you don't have a car, you will have to pay people to drive you around and if you do have a car, often times you will rarely find free parking. But there's traffic in both cities and it will be hard to avoid no matter where you go.
