Hair for formal dinner.

I'm going to a 90th birthday soon and its a pretty formal dinner and I also want to look good because I'm meeting a lot of people I haven't met before. I was thinking of doing a high pony tail (hairspraying down any fly aways) and then curling my ponytail. When I straighten my hair it still gets frizzy so I was thinking if I do it in a pony tail it would help with the frizz but would it be to informal?
