You need to know how to pick out a foundation.
What skin tone you are , face shape, eye shape, skin type. All those things are prime.

I would also not start with foundation... I started with mascara and neutrals eyeshadows and then added blush and lipstick. but it also depend on why you want to use makeup.
if it's to enhance a feature then begin with this. if you want to correct or camouflage something, head in that direction!
it really depend on what you like :)

Also what helps is having someone do your makeup for you a few times and have them explain what they did on one half of your face and then have you do the other half. I like doing that for my friends so that they know how to do it themselves! (If this doesn't make sense I'll explain it again! Sorry I'm super tired right now!)

I recommend starting with a foundation. Just apply it with your fingers, later on you can use brushes. When your foundation is applied you can use mascara and lipgloss. That's just a basic look. Once you've mastered that, you can play around with bronzer, blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner etcetera.

If your wanting to cover some acne or anything like that on your face, I'd recommend using a BB cream. Try starting out with mascara, lip glosses, and some eyeshadow colours you feel comfortable with:)
