I would suggest getting matches at Sephora or MAC (wherever you're buying your foundation from) and then use findation.com to find your matches for other foundations (:

In addition to what Alexis suggested...also going to a Bobbi Brown counter to get a color matched as well. If you have a yellow-undertone to your skin then that line will be your best friend because she specializes in yellow-undertone skin. I usually swatch along my jaw line and blend in. If it disappears then its a match. :)
