Would powder foundation on top of a bb/cc cream be a bad idea for dry skin? Would it "build up" on dry areas and look cakey and gross? I don't really like wearing liquid foundation to school, but a bb cream doesn't help with my redness,so I'm thinking a light powder foundation on top would be a good alternative if I didn't have dry skin.

Its been a while since I've tried a powder foundation, but unless there are some drastically new products out there, I don't think it would be best for your skin type. In my opinion, powder foundations are better suited for oily skin. My suggestion would be to get a light coverage foundation with a non-matte finish. My skin tends to be a little dry and my favorite foundation is the Dior Star foundation. It looks so natural and glowy without going into the greasy territory. I suggest this because you mentioned you didn't want to wear liquid foundation to school. While this is a foundation, it doesn't look like you're wearing anything. I started using it after trying a bunch of BB creams to wear to college. None of them covered like I wanted and did not last the entire day. If you're not getting the coverage you want with BB creams, I would suggest experimenting with light/medium coverage liquid foundations.

Actually I have super dry skin that gets so bad that it starts flaking. Anyways I've used just about every foundation out there that is drugstore and tons of high end as well. Anyways I've been wearing powder foundations for about 5ish years now and I think it looks so much nicer than most liquids. I get great coverage for a natural looking face not too heavy. I recommend Bare Minerals (Original; not everyone likes it because some people break out but I have never had issues with that), Tarte, Philosophy, & Merle Norman are great. I only wear liquids for special occasions like taking photos or prom, stuff like that, but most of the time I just wear powder.

To prevent any cakey or that powdery look here is what I do:
1. Moisturize with CeraVe Moisturizing Cream & Philosophy Back To Nurture.

2. Primer (either Bare Minerals Prime Time or L'Oreal Magic Lumi; Hourglass is awesome but expensive and sadly made me breakout).

3. Apply Bare Minerals (Original; with a brush that is from Bare Minerals/flat top kabuki looking brush).

4. I apply the rest of my makeup. Eyebrows & eye makeup.

5. Then I go back with concealer and clean up any fallout from my eyeshadows or to help conceal my dark circles or any blemishes.

Doing the concealer or a liquid cc, bb cream, foundation, etc. is important to do after applying the powder. If I do the concealer first it usually ends up look very heavy and gross looking. Powder is not for everyone but I have found that powders actually tend to work better for dry skin types which is actually the opposite of what most people think. I have also found that my skin does not break out as much because I'm not using liquids all the time.

Liquid foundations I recommend: Clinique Super Moisture, Clinique Even Better (its nice and similar to the other but I think its a little bit more coverage), Makeup Forever HD (I'm not a big fan of the new formula but its okay), Laura Mercier Silk Creme.

Mac has a powder foundation called CAREBLEND. Its for drier skin. It has a creamy texture for a powder so it has better adherence on the skin and it gives a velvety finish. But like any cosmetic, its trial & error. Application is a major factor too to avoiding a caky result. After your bb cream sets, I would lightly tap on the powder with a soft tapered brush instead of a powder brush. You're less likely to over-do it when you take your time and use a light hand. Use as little powder as you can. Definitely test it out before buying.

Lisa, I'm glad to hear that it works for some people with dry skin to use powder foundations! I'll look into the ones you mentioned. Thank you so much!:)

Check out Youtube for some reviews. Even oily-skinned girls like it.

Well if your concern is redness, powder is not going to cover it very well. The solution would be a green primer before you apply your BB cream. Most of the powders will make noticeable the dry areas of your face. There are many options for green primers: from NYX, to L'?real to Smashbox
