I have very picky low porosity hair that is protein sensitive. I have trouble finding a moisturizer or leave in conditioner. I'd prefer it to be inexpensive and easily bought at the store.

Would an oil work? Like argan oil? I'm not sure about protein content but I usually use oils on my hair - I like the argan oil by ogx but you can buy any brand - and also the super skinny serum by Paul Mitchell is awesome too but it's way more pricey - you could also try other oils like jojoba or coconut oil.

Those oils would make my hair feel like a Brillo pad. I can't use anything that acts as a protein. I need my products to be protein free because my hair makes enough protein.

All you need is water. My hair is the exact same way, especially when I use coconut oil. Protein sensitive hair just means your hair already has a lot of protein. It needs to be balanced out with moisture and the the best form of moisture is straight up water. Try wetting your hair every other day if not everyday. You'll notice a huge difference in the texture of your hair. And if you can't wet your hair so often because of styling issues then opt for a leave-in like Mai O stated above.

Do you think I could use my conditioner as a leave in? if so how would I do it?

Well... yes and no.
yes because it might work for a while. with a light rinse out conditionner (like tresemme naturals or suave), never a deep conditionner. just take a little amount and use it on clean, damp hair.
No because they're specifically made to be rinsed out. what could happen is at best a light case of buildup on your hair. at worse, it can cause you scalp problems or make your hair feel dry/crunchy/heavy/dull.
