DIY Honey Recipes

Published May 30, 2011

When used in your beauty routine, honey soothes inflammation, hydrates the skin, and protects against bacteria. In part 1 of our honey series, see how women used honey in their ancient beauty routines. Fortunately, women today still incorporate this all-natural nectar into personal care. Here are three of our favorite D.I.Y. honey recipes you can get from the supermarket. For any of these recipes, remember that raw honey is best.

Firming Face Mask

  1. 1 Tablespoon Honey

  2. 1 Egg White

  3. 1 Teaspoon Glycerin

  4. 1/4 Cup Flour

Whisk together honey, egg white, and glycerin, then add flour to form a paste (adjust the amount of flour to suit the texture you want). Slather mixture all over face and throat, and leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse of with warm water and enjoy soft, hydrated skin!

Honey & Avocado Nail Scrub

  1. 1 Tablespoon Honey

  2. 1 Tablespoon Avocado Oil

  3. 1 Egg Yolk

  4. 3 Drops of Apple Cider Vinegar

  5. 1 Pinch of Salt (preferably Himalayan Crystal Salt)

Mix all of the ingredients together and massage into nails and cuticles. Leave on nails for 10-15 minutes then rinse off with warm water. It's best to use Himalayan Salt because it's rich in minerals without any additives or pollutants. Alternatively, you can use kosher sea salt.

Almond Oil Hair Treatment With Honey

  1. 1 Cup Plain Yogurt

  2. 2 Tablespoons Honey

  3. 2 Tablespoons Almond Oil

  4. 1 Tablespoon Wheat Germ

  5. 1 Pinch of Salt (preferably Himalayan Crystal Salt)

Mix all ingredients in a cup, then coat hair and scalp with this mixture. Massage for a few minutes before you enter the shower. Rinse off in the shower with warm water and shampoo with a mild cleanser if you still feel residue in your hair.

I just did a face mask a few hours ago with honey and extra-virgin olive oil and my face feels so moisturized now! i didn't know honey helps with acne scarring, either.... i guess that's why my skin didn't look as bad as before... :P

My favorite thing to do is to use a very small amount of honey and sugar and make a homemade lip scrub. Half honey, half sugar, just a tiny amount (about the size of a pea) and it does great at exfoliating lips :D

Me too! It works soo well.

Sounds fantastic and super easy! Thanks for sharing Samantha :)

I've been using natural honey on my face for more than a month now and I have to say I love the results. I usually apply it on my face and neck once a week. It leaves your face moisturized and glowing. It is also good for acne scars. What I do is place some honey in a cup and heat it the microwave for about 5 seconds and than I apply the honey with my fingertips on my face and neck and leave it on for about 30 minutes or as long as you want--I even left it on for about half an hour once. I rise it off my face with water and pat dry. As for acne scars, I have the bad habit of popping my pimples, so after I pop them and clean the infected area, I put honey on it and the next day the scarring isn't as bad and eventually fades away.

wow! i didn't know honey can help for acne scars! I too pop my pimples(horrid habit) and i'm stuck with scarring for days on end...thanks for the tip!

I didn't know honey helps with acne scars either...must start using NOW!!! Thanks for the info =)

Hm, now that I think about it, I stopped using all the products that had honey in them... But I do love my Burt's Bees honey lip balm! I didn't know honey could be used in so many ways.
