I am an amateur MUA. I have had several jobs doing makeup, Mostly prom, graduation, and weddings of people I know. I have a great opperunity to build up my portfolio my good friend is a freelance photographer who is doing an event. Glamour shots she wants me to be there to be the makeup artist. Which I love and am excited about the caches is theres 7 girls 30 minute face time for each one. I have never done more then one person at a time. Any advice tips tricks you can give me would be so awesome. I am also worried about the hygene issuse now I have spray disinfectant but with 7 ppl Is there away quick to dry I can make sure the brushes are disinfected or is just my spray ok? thanks for anything you can give me. I am excited but worried I might be in over my head
The most number of faces I've done for a photo shoot is about 4. This was for a fashion magazine that I'm a part of at my school.
Always disinfect your brushes after each makeup application. I use a brush cleaner from e.l.f. that's good enough to clean the brushes decent enough for the next application, plus the brushes dry in less than 5 minutes. If anything else, you can use disposable makeup applicators as well.
If you have all your makeup & tools organized on a table, you'll spend less time trying to go through your makeup case looking for an eyeshadow, eyeliner, whatever the case may be.
I also use ELFto me for right now the price fits my budget and works well. I always set everything out. I have a table i carry with me on jobs just incase theres not one around Ive had that happen before. lol thank you shawnee think of anything else let me know
That's what I started buying too, is ELF. I started buying their studio collection & I'm pretty sure I'm almost have brought everything from that collection already & I plan on buying the mineral eyeshadows. You should also invest in some palettes from BH Cosmetics. I haven't heard nothing bad about them & I brought those palettes for my friends as a Christmas present they love them. Maybelline's eyeshadows are of good quality too, they're pigmented too.
IDK what kind of chair you use when you're doing makeup application, but I suggest you buy one of those director's chairs. Trying to do makeup in a regular chair is such a pain the ass & hurts my back. Plus I feel like you can apply makeup better because the chair is at the same level as you, so you can see better when applying makeup.
But just take your time when doing your makeup, & you'll be just fine. As long as you're organized this will be a breeze(:
<<You should also invest in some palettes from BH Cosmetics.>>
I don't advise buying palettes from them. Not because they're a bad company (I don't believe they are), but because you can get the exact same palettes on eBay for much, much cheaper (BH marks up the prices in order to turn a profit), and often with free shipping.
If you have enough time to buy a second set of brushes (or even a third set), if you have only one set at the moment, I'd recommend doing that. That way, while one set is drying after being cleaned, you can go on to work on another client with a clean set. (If you've seen any pictures or whatnot behind the scenes at a fashion show, you'll notice the makeup artist has a LOT of brushes at hand.) Also, disposable applicators (mascara wands, lipgloss wands) are a must.
try to use only a few brushes on each client. for example, if you have a brush that you can use for their powder, bronzer, and blush do that instead of using 2-3 different brushes. that allows you to have more brushes for the other girls. same goes for the eyes, if you can use a brush for primer, shadow and a brow highlight do that. try to make your brushes as useful as possible.
@shanee : I have coastal scents 88 ultra shimmer and bh 120 matte along with 800 more singles duos and other smaller palettes but those two i use the most bc all the colors are right there no going back and fourth. I havent thought of buying a makeup chair. thats a great idea thanks. do you know where to get one?
@ shelly: My mentor talked me into investing in some bobbi brown brushes today. I think foundation brush wise maybe another might go along way? its really the foundation brushes that make me work hygene and build up wise.
I know NYX has one for $150, so does this other website called makeupart.net. If you wanna go the cheaper route, teamlogo.com has director's chairs too. You can even get it customized with your name on it, pretty sweet if you ask me(:
- For a quick brush cleaner, put some 99% rubbing alcohol in a small spray bottle and use that! the brushes dry right away and get super clean. I've been doing this since September and none of my brushes have dried out. It's something I learned in class and it literally doesn't even take one minute to dry (unless it's a face brush)
- HAVE TISSUE! Or some sort of napkin/gibson towel. It will help to clean your brushes inbetween clients and it's just good to have it on hand
- Invest in GOOD quality brushes! This will obviously take time, though
- Practice your timing by doing makeup on friends!
- Buy disposable applicators (mascara wands ESPECIALLY, makeup sponges, lipgloss applicators, q-tips, cottons pads..)
- Always keep sanitizer in your kit and also some gum/mints just in case because you never know when you/your clients might need some.. lol
- Be organized so you know where everything is and try to have a table to yourself where you can lay out all of your tools and products to make it easier for yourself rather than going in and out of your kit. Even have your palettes laid out OPEN on the tables to make it MORE easier
Good luck! Honestly just have fun with it, I'm sure you'll do fine :)
