Will salons or retail stores only hire makeup artist who went to school and have a certificate?
Thanks in advance; )
Hey there, I can only speak from my experience, but yes you need to have your liscense to work at a salon, and while its not always needed for retail, experience and schooling play a big role in determining who gets hired.
As Hannah says, salons require licenses. Retail, I am not sure about, but as in everything else in life, school and experience are usually a deciding factor. The Robert Jones Beauty Academy is an online school and has different levels of certification; apprentice, master and pro. It is very reasonable. Some suggestions I would give if you are confident in your skills:
*Market yourself to photographers and photography stylists it's not the best way to make money (at first) but an excellent way to build your portfolio!
*Find make-up artists in your area and see if they need an assistant. Again, not the best way to make money, but a great way to learn and gain hands on experience.
I know my suggestions aren't the best way to make money fast, but you will gain knowledge, experience and build a portfolio, not to mention having Professional References to add to your resume. Probably didn't answer your question, but hopefully helped in some way.
I'm not sure if it varies in each state but I work at a salon as a MUA and I don't have a makeup license.

Most salons do require a cosmetology or esthetician license to work in the salon. Call your state cosmetology board to find out the requirements.
As for retail jobs, usually no license or certificate is required. Again, I would check with your state board just to confirm. But if you don't need it then go for it. If you are really personable and have the skills and talent needed, there isn't any reason for someone to not take a chance on you.

it varies state to state and depends on where you want to work, in a salon or retail or freelance. If you want to start your own freelance business, check out http://www.moneymakingmakeupartist.... There are free resources and workshops available. The January group starts next week and there is a great deal to get in on that.
