☼☼ What is lupus? Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints, and/or organs inside the body). Chronic means that the signs and symptoms tend to last longer than six weeks and often for many years. In lupus, something goes wrong with your immune system, which is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and germs ("foreign invaders," like the flu). Normally our immune system produces proteins called antibodies that protect the body from these invaders. Autoimmune means your immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign invaders and your body's healthy tissues ("auto" means "self") and creates autoantibodies that attack and destroy healthy tissue. These autoantibodies cause inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body.

☼☼ Qué es el lupus? El lupus es una enfermedad crónica autoinmune que puede dañar cualquier parte del cuerpo (la piel, las articulaciones y/o los órganos internos del cuerpo). Normalmente, el sistema autoinmune produce proteínas denominadas anticuerpos que protegen el cuerpo de invasores externos, como las bacterias y los virus. Con el lupus, el sistema inmunológico no puede apreciar la diferencia que existe entre estos invasores externos y los tejidos sanos del cuerpo, y produce autoanticuerpos ("auto" significa "propio" o "por uno mismo") que atacan y destruyen tejidos sanos. Estos autoanticuerpos provocan inflamación, dolor y daños en distintas partes del cuerpo. El lupus es una enfermedad de recaídas (los síntomas empeoran y Ud. se siente enfermo) y remisiones (los síntomas disminuyen y Ud. se siente mejor). El lupus puede presentarse desde formas leves hasta formas que ponen en riesgo la vida y siempre debe tratarse con un médico. Con una buena atención médica, la mayoría de las personas con lupus pueden llevar una vida plena.


☼☼ Lupus Symbols - Símbolos del lupus

Purple - Purple represents courage and endurance things all lupus patients must have.

Violeta - El violeta representa la valentía y la resistencia, dos cosas que todos los pacientes con lupus deben tener.

Butterfly: Traditionally the butterfly represents freedom, transformation and recovery. Also, one of the more common symptoms of Lupus is called a butterfly rash. It is a red rash across the nose and cheeks that resembles a butterfly. That is why the butterfly has become the symbol of hope for Lupus patients.

Mariposa: Tradicionalmente, la mariposa representa la libertad, la transformación y la recuperación. Además, uno de los síntomas más comunes del lupus se conoce como erupción de mariposa.
