It's "plum", not "purple". More subtle. Benefit is about keeping the look "natural". If you wear it closer to the base and then add the black on the ends, it brightens up the eyes. Definitely not a lengthening mascara. The brush is mainly for volumizing. It's a matte finish, and although a great mascara, tends to be smudgy :(
