I see that you are not supposed to wash your hair every day, but on the days you skip, do you still use conditioner in the shower? just no shampoo?

Erica B. It's all good girl. Life is too short to allow another's opinion to get your blood pressure up. You're passionate about your craft and I totally get that. Shelly T. is passionate as well in regards to her beliefs. Us women need to stick together. This is my little piece of heaven in a hectic world and I love hanging out here. :)

Ladies, I am all for giving the right information, but please keep from using profanity and keep to the subject at hand. This is a welcoming environment here and we should be helping each other not attacking or assuming. xoxo

My apologies. I get defensive when I'm being attacked about my profession. I get sick of hearing negative people, & since I'm new here, I'm shocked at how unwelcoming & rude people can be.

OMG!!! The anger/tension is thick in this thread....its insane and totally unwarranted. Let's all keep it classy. We're all allowed to have an opinion but lets practice restraint and not bash eachother.

If you checked out the first link I posted, about Diversion, you'll answer your questions about salon brands being sold at drugstores/grocery stores. Salon brands say on the bottles "Not guaranteed unless bought in a salon" or something to that extent, the stuff sold at other places is usually counterfeit, adulterated, or black market. It's frustrating when someone feels the need to contradict everything I say, refuses to believe any of it, & doesn't pay real attention to any evidence I am trying to provide to support my education & profession except to call it fear mongering. I know my stuff, I worked as a chemist for years before becoming a hairdresser; I ASK QUESTIONS of my clients about not only the products they use but what they do to their hair on a daily basis, such as blow drying, flat ironing, etc. I doubt all my clients that use drugstore products are lying about what else they do to their hair, maybe every single one of them that uses Pantene also flat irons their hair 16 times a day even though they tell me they don't. Yes, part of my job is selling product, but LIKE I ALREADY SAID, I'm certainly not trying to sell anything on here, nor do I benefit from any of this, since I'm pretty sure no one on here in my client or even shops where I work. Use what you want, I don't care. But I can see some issues with your hair from your profile picture on here, so you might want to rethink your routine. I obviously won't try to help you since you don't believe any of it, & that's fine. My clients that follow my advice all have amazing hair, the fact that I'm booked solid for weeks in advance speaks for itself.

@Erica: That final piece is full of scaremongering. They've bought into the BS that EWG/CFSC peddle... hook, line, and sinker.

<<I see the damage they cause,>>

But how do you know it's always the products they use and not the fact that someone fries the crap out of their hair with irons and blow dryers? Or brushes their hair with a hairbrush while it's still wet (which, I believe, can also damage your hair)? Also, I've seen various salon brands sold at drugstores/Walmart/Target, which (for me) means your suggestion ("don't buy hair care where you would buy food" (paraphrased)) doesn't wash. The other thing is that, as a hair stylist, generally speaking, part of your job *is* to sell product (isn't a good chunk of a salon's revenue derived from retail sales?). So forgive me for being a skeptic, asking questions, trying to be an informed consumer, wanting to avoid fearmongering and junk science to get to the truth.

http://www.redkensalon.com/difference/anti-diversion/ Here's why you should buy from salon professionals.
http://www.happynews.com/living/haircare/professional-versus-drug.htm Here's a good article that even says some drugstore products are ok, which I don't even agree with, but she makes valid points about professional products.
I don't understand why people are getting so upset when I say drugstore products are not good for your hair. I'm not making you not buy them, I'm not trying to sell you products I use, I'm not your hairdresser. But I know what I deal with on a daily basis, I see the damage they cause, it's not always evident right away but years of using products that are bad for your hair (& you body in general, if you believe the research about sulfates & such), you could regret it. It's just like smoking or tanning-your skin might not look bad now, but 20 years from now there's just going to be irreversible damage. At least with problems associated with bad products, you can shave your head & start over. Chill.
Here's a good article on bad stuff in different cosmetics products, not just hair care. http://smartgirlconsulting.com/2010/01/10-toxic-ingredients-to-avoid/
I'm done with this, I talk to my clients daily about it, I'm tired of doing it in my free time.

Just be careful when you use dry shampoo to make sure you're using a clarifying shampoo more often, cause dry shampoos are notorious for ridiculous build up :)

It seems to me like washing the natural oils out of your hair every day can mess with your scalp's natural oil production (how many hairy animals can you think of that shampoo?), but if you're really concerned with damage I would reconsider styling with heat and using harsh dyes. I've seen lots of women who wash every day with perfectly decent hair, and some women who swear that washing too often is bad for you but burn the **** out of their own so badly if looks ready to just fall out. Try out a few things to see what works for you.

Dawn M is 100% correct-you have to train it. I have very oily hair, but I also color it a dark violet, so to preserve the color I now wash it only 5 days. By day 4, I break out the dry shampoo (Batiste is what I swear by, for the love of god, put down the Tresame. ANYTHING YOU BUY FOR YOUR HAIR FROM A PLACE THAT SELLS FOOD IS NOT GOOD. Now, I know Batiste is sometimes sold in drugstores, but it is literally the only product besides men's pomade for pompadours that I allow my clients to use that isn't a professional salon product.) Start doing every other day. Brush your hair when it's dry with a boar bristle brush to distribute the oil better. After 4-6 weeks, you will see a difference. You have to think of it like breaking a bad habit; it sucks at first, it's kind of gross, but in the end you'll be happier!

I wash my hair every 2-3 days. If i wash it everyday, my hair looks really dry and dull.

I wash my hair every other day, and I have a REALLY oily scalp and when it feels oily, i just take a bit of baby powder and it does the trick!

so should i just keep doing it? i want to try to get to only washing it every 2 days, bc of how bad it is to wash it everyday. i honestly can't stand to though haha thanks for all the advice everyone!

You have to train your hair to be washed every other day, etc. I too used to wash my hair every single day.. now I wash it either every other day or every 3 days (depending on what it looks like).

I use the Tresemme fresh start as well but I also really love the Oscar Biandi dry shampoo.

My hair would get very oily as well at first but after a while you literally train your hair and it gets used to it... The hair produces more oil because the detergents are stripping your hair.

I was my hair almost every night and sleep with it wet to cure the oil problem!

Correction, they do not put sulfur in shampoo, they put sulfates in shampoo. Sulfates are SO4 while sulfur is just S. If they put Sulfur in your shampoo your hair would smell like rotten eggs.

It isn't good to wash you hair everyday. However giving yourself a 5 minute scalp massage will help regulate your oil glands. This works for oily and dry scalp. As far as a dry shampoo, you might want to try one from a professional hair care line. If you feel you need to wash your hair everyday, buy a mild or gentle sulfate free shampoo.

I recommend only buying professional products because what makes most shampoo's lather is sulfur. Drugstore brands have more sulfate in them which will damage/dry your hair out more than professional products. Also professional products are more concentrated so when you think about price it kind-of evens out.

Not only does washing every day affect the hair it also affects the scalp as well. It can dry out the scalp since you're constantly removing the oils to keep it balanced. Also you could also investigate shampoos that do not contain sulfates. I wear my hair naturally curly and when I left the sulfate based shampoos alone my scalp and hair actually had a nice balance of natural oil. And are you using a lot of styling products as well? They can contribute to an ily scalp as well.

Well, I've heard that the more you wash your hair, the more oil it will produce - so it's preferable to wash it every two days, to keep it from getting too oily =)) But it will take a bit of time for your hair to adjust to being washed every two days, so dry shampoo is an option to keep it from looking all greasy:) xoxo

I have super oily hair. I recently heard it was bad to wash it everyday, so I bought some dry shampoo its the Treseme freshstart, but when I used it, it didn't really help much. Is there such thing as your hair being too oily to not wash everyday?
