Hello Ladies! I'm looking for a sulfate free shampoo that smells lovely. Not interested in the L'Oreal shampoos that say sulfate free but have tons of ingredients that are actually sulfate subs though.
Am interested in sulfate-free because would like to avoid the extra carcinogens. Have heard good things about how it reacts with hair too, ie healthier, softer, less shedding...
Any suggestions?

Aubrey Organics makes an entire line of Sulfate free shampoos in tons of different scents. I was using their Honeysuckle Rose line, which smells like spring in a bottle. Very natural, not at all perfumey, and absolutely lovely. Whole Foods carries the entire line, as well as their facial cleansers, soaps, and moisturizers.
Aveda shampoos are also sulfate free. I'm using their damage repair line right now and it all smells beautifully herbal and fresh, not like the L'Oreal chicken marinade smell. If you're willing to put some money into your haircare routine, Aveda is my all-time favourite brand. And it lasts forever, because it really doesn't take much at all.
I had been using sulfate free shampoos for years simply for colour preservation, but made the leap back to drugstore brands to save myself time and effort only to find out I'm deathly allergic to sulfates. My skin turns bright red, spotty, lumpy, itchy and hot, and I was getting ulcers in some spots. But using the lines mentioned above, that has stopped completely. Definitely recommend sulfate free products!

Wow, thx for the detailed reply Luna! I've always loved Aveda shampoos (shampure is a favorite), gotta go get some tonight. Will also check out Aubrey, not sure if I love the smell though.

I've spent way too much time looking into more natural haircare products, so glad to help! --Once I finish off my bottles of Damage Repair, I'm going to try their Black Malva line. Hoping it will smell just as fresh.
The good thing about Aubrey is that it comes in tons of different formulations. If you're not into florals, there's an Island Tropics line, a Chamomile line, and tons of others that smell radically different.

Outside of color preservation, did you find any other benefits from switching? I'm using products with sulfates right now and am trying to move over. But I know it'll take some adjustment.

It definitely takes a little getting used to. The most noticeable difference is in the feel of the shampoo itself. Shampoos containing sulfates are going to produce a lot more lather than those without (this goes for most products, though--it almost seems like companies put SLS in their products to produce more lather and give a more "clean" feeling, like in hand soaps, toothpaste, and body washes). It doesn't mean your hair isn't clean.
Since cutting out my sulfates, I've noticed my hair is softer, super-shiny, and much more compliant. Sulfate-free shampoos are way more gentle, and when I used to struggle with dried-out straw-hair, it's made a complete and total recovery.
Other people I've talked to have also noticed a lessening in hair loss--they notice less hair left in the brush, in the drain, on their clothes. I'm not sure I've noticed this myself, but I also don't brush my hair more than once a day, and since I don't feel like I have thin hair I'm not concerned.

Awesome, thanks Luna. Naomi, why do you like Burt's Bees? I've tried their raspberry kind and I felt like it left a layer of wax on my hair, but maybe I was just imagining that?

I live in Dominican Republic and its pretty difficult to find a big range of hair products but the basics and popular brands. SLS makes my scalp itchy, red and with a horrible burning feeling so i decided to try JOHNSON'S NATURAL Baby 3 in 1 (couldn't find the shampoo) and my scalp and my hair feel sooo much better. Their website states that their Natural products don't include: Parabens, Dyes, Animal Byproducts
Silicones, Lanolin, Paraffin, Petrolatum, Phthalates or Essential Oils. I will start using the shampoo :)

Try Terax Latte Shampoo--it smells like Nilla wafer cookies! Yum Yum. It's also a great shampoo to use--makes hair shiny and clarifies without drying/stripping.

I like The Body Shop's Rainforest Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner...NO silicones, sulphates, parabens or colorants! After using it a couple days my hair felt better than ever before!

I love Enjoy Shampoo and Conditioner, the ones in the pink bottle. They are sulfate free and they just make my hair feel so clean and soft!

SLS and SLES are NOT carcinogenic. That's a BS myth perpetuated to scare people into going sulfate-free. Hell, you can get both ingredients naturally from coconuts!
