TO NON S.: Sweety, you need to demand that your school goes more into detail about African American hair. Because not only does it expand your MIND and consumption of KNOWLEDGE, it helps with the African American clientele you do receive at your school. Either that or you can switch to a school that is located in more of an urban surrounding so that the teachers can offer a little bit more when it comes to styling and caring for African American hair (everyone is different, keep in mind). But, the key to expanding your mind is not only on your teachers, it's also on you. It's your choice to know more about your craft, it's about how much YOU WANT to learn.

Hello my Beauties,

My topic today is on dry hair, not just any dry hair, but African American or (Black) hair. We do so much with our hair from day to day. One day it's straight, the next day it's curly, the next braided. Because of the texture of our hair we have the ability to do a variety of styles with our hair. As we style, process, blow dry, flat iron, ect... we also strip our hair of it's natural oils. In order to replace the much needed oils back into our hair (to repair the damage of styling) I recommend Hot Oil treatments each time you wash your hair. As we all know we do not wash our hair daily, but once a week and during that washing process I recommend use a bend of natural oils for your Hot Oil treatment. If you would like to share the type of oils you use feel free to add to this conversation, I would live to hear your thoughts. Until then, stay positive and stay beautiful!

I use coconut oil and black castor oil.

I don't use any day to day products in my hair. I go to the salon 2 or 3 times a months and that's about it.

I need me a hot oil treatment because my hair is brick dry at the moment. Normally, I use a glycerin based activator and then I lock it in with shea butter oil but less than an hour later, my hair gets dry and crispy again. I don't know what to do :(

TO KYMBERLY - My hair is a natural fro. It eats up anything I put in it, but loves water (spritz), but need some sort of pomade (it loves oils, but must be heavy or it just sits on top of the hair - not cute when you put your hand thru it and ugh..oil:(..)..And not cute carrying around a spritz bottle:( So have to figure out something:) TO KENSIE - Does the activator have "alcohol" as an ingredient? I had that problem (drying and getting crispy), and realized "alcohol" based products do that. Its your hair saying: What The Flip??? What you just give me!!!!...haha..so its unhappy:(

Josephine, I believe a hot oil treatment with Coconut oil may help you dry hair situation. It may take several tries, and I am aware you hate coconut, but it is worth a try.

Speaking of oils, dry hair & moisturization & African American hair..I've noticed my clients are very particular about one thing-some when I am giving them a blow-out & flat iron, want their part at each sectioned "greased," others do not want and/or are just not keen on the products that my cosmo. school provides. One woman told me doing as such was "old-fashioned"-I of course strive to be professional & consult with each client before we get started. What do you ladies think? I want to give all my clients the best service possible & sadly, my best resource for my AA clients has been the clients themselves, other classmates, and the internet, not my instructors as our class materials merely glide over said subject. Highly frustrating.. If you do like your parting is oiled, moisturized, etc, are there any products that your happen to like? Now mind you I am aware that I am also dealing not only with various textures of AA hair, but also some of my clients have had relaxers, some are natural, some have regrowth... Besides this, I do ensure that my clients have proper heat-protecting products on their hair prior to the service. Thanks!

I'm a firm believer in conditions right now I'm using the Living Proof Restore Mask
And the Morrican OIl when you roller set my hair it has been a good combination for me leaving my hair without any split ends or dryness

Conditioners are also my best friend. From the ones that cost .88 to more expensive ones. I love mixing all my conditioners together with my oils & honey & letting it sit for hours.

There are alot of oils that our hair loves: Olive oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil (which I use), almond oil. I also use Shea Moisture porducts in my curly hair because my hair is soooo dry. I used to get relaxers back in the day, got my last relaxer in july of '09 and now im curly...

profectiv Mega Growth: Growth oil
It's a mixture of wheat protein, oat protein, soy protein, horsetail extract, wheat germ oil, olive oil, flax seed oil, jojoba oil, silk amino acids, avocado oil, coconut oil, grape seed oil.
You can find it at wal mart where the other mega growth products are.
I have south American hair it is very coarse and breaks very easily. This mix of oils helps. Also I stay away from shampoo because it breaks my hair too much.

@NON S. If you aren't learning about AA hair in detail at school then its up to you to educate yourself unless you do what Imani A. suggested (attend another school where it is a focus). If that isn't possible....research, research. Myself personally when I get my hair trimmed (I wear my hair naturally curly) I only go once a year and the stylist has to flat-iron it to give a proper trim. The first time working with her she reached for this hair grease. I almost slapped that mess out of her hand.lol. I hate petro based mineral oil containing products when it comes to my hair and skin. A line that works great on AA hair that I've been using for 15 years is called Phyto. I only use Phyto 7 and Phyto 9. I rotate between the two but now for my yearly trim I hand over Phyto 7 to the stylist and she uses it as she blowdry's my hair prior to using the straightener. This stuff is pricey but its bontanically based. I like being asked before application of any styling product if its something I want instead of it being slapped on my hair. FYI....the two conditioning balms that I just mentioned helps with hair growth as well.

WOW! I am totally encouraged and blown away at the response to my hair care question. Thank you all who responded, I feel well educated on how to keep my hair moisturized during these hot summer months. Thanks again my Beauties! Keep the post coming.

You want to focus on using the proper shampoo and conditioner before you start overdosing on styling products and oils. Using a moisture shampoo and conditioner on a regular basis is the first step. I love to use Design Essentials moisture shampoo and express conditioner.

Does anyone know of a good moisture rich Natural Shampoo and Conditioner. When I say Natural I mean without Sulfates, Alcohol, Parabens and Phthalates, anyone know of such a product?

Loreal Evercreme is a nourishing masque...it's only about $9, and it works wonders on my difficult hair. It is sulfate and paraben free. :)
