Prime the face, that's a must, because it decreases the look of fine lines and smooths the face! Then choose a foundation that will last as much as you on a daily basis! Lastly, use a makeup setter to set all that hard work you put on!

Like Tina and vickie mentioned, make sure you prime your face.. Also if you're using liquid foundation make sure you set it with a powder.

Try the Smashbox Primer, works really good! use it before your foundation, then afterwards set your foundation by lightly applying powder, after that use a setting spray, like Urban Decay D Slick.

I know this sounds wierd, but corn starch! I put my liquid foundation on, the use a little bit of corn starch just like powder on top of it, and it sets it! Then I put my powder on top of that. It works super well, and it's cheep and easy! Nice not to have I go out and buy something expensive.

Before you even think about makeup, get your skincare routine sorted out and make sure you're using the right products for you. I know I go on about this a lot, but it really is important. (IMO, many a makeup issue can be resolved by tweaking the skincare.)

Then carry this philosophy over to your makeup. Find the right primer for you. Find the right foundation for you. Et cetera. If you're using what works best for you, you'll have less issues. :)
