I've used several belts and I have the same problem with them all. The wedging sounds like it may work.

You can always use heavy paper towels to stuff them with... Then when it's time to clean your belt, you can toss it into the recycling bin and replace with new ones t keep things clean. =]

Makeup mekka has some good brush belts too. They even have large pockest to keep makeup wedges, cotton pads or other tools you want. The price is £10.

I have a brush belt from BH Cosmetics ,its rather cheap and it holds alot of brushes, along with slots for other items. The only problem is yes the pockets are deep..I will have to try stuffing with wedges or paper towels as suggested above.

I've got the red PVC brushbelt from Inglot which is a nice change to usual black! And it's really easy to clean as it's PVC ;) People are always commenting on the colour and I'm so glad I bought it :)
